Aqua C Remora cleaning question

Just wondering what parts of the skimmer you clean to keep it working the most effieciently. There a a lot of things growing on the inside of mine. Should I take the unit off the aquarium and really give it a going over? It functions, but I never get the kind of skimmate that I saw in the picture on proteinskimmer.com

Is the brush that comes with it good for anything? I do clean the cup regularly but I don't really know what else to do.

When I clean mine, I just take a big bottle brush and swish all around the chambers and rinse out with warm water. The main thing to clean is the injector, which is accessed by removing the white screw at the top of the tube. Use the little brush that came with the unit to scrub out the injector. I would also clean the pump at this time.

HTH, and don't lose the screw :)

good thread...i have the same one and was wondering this.

are you all getting good skim? it doesn't seem like mine pulls out much. i always thought i just had clean water.

how about bubbles? you all having them? i have a lot still.

No bubbles now. Man, it skimmed as much in one day as it did in the previous month. Good thing I have a skimmer, right? I am pretty good at aquarium upkeep, but I really never think much about the skimmer except emptying the collection cup. I just noticed that it was operating less efficiently.

maybe your injector needs to be cleaned again? if it was stacked up maybe it clogged itself again quickly after working so well.

Aqua C update

Aqua C update

I got home an checked the collection cup. Almost to the overflow with nastiness! WooHoo!

Now I have a skimmer.

I guess I should have cleaned it sometime in the last 6 months.

Thanks for the help.

Man watch for cyano outbreak! I cleaned my prizm pro about 4 months ago and had a brutal cyano outbreak. I was a little reluctant because of all the stuff growing inside like sponges, fan worms, barnacles and what not. Well after I cleaned it all out it seemed all the stuff was doing more for filtering then the stupid skimmer. Will never clean mine again. Just let it become sort of a fuge of sorts along with some mediocre skimming.

I've always wondered what that screw was for. Is it's sole purpose to just give access to the pipe? I noticed mine stopped skimming as well too...Maybe i'll give mine the ol' one-two one of these days and try it out on a ten gallon nano I'm debating on starting.

Yeah, just take the little brush tool and clean away. Make sure you don't strip the screw or worse yet screw it down inside the injector. ;)

What tightness do you want the screw? Mine has stopped skimming as well as it used to when i first got it too. I received it as a gift for Christmas, set it up the next day and haven't touched it (as far as cleaning) since except to empty the collection cup and clean that out.

someone also mentioned that if the skimmer isn't level, it won't skim well either, is this true? Sorta makes sense when you think about it.

As far as tightness of the screw, when I took mine out, I counted how many revolutuions so I could set it back to the same point. If you need to know, I could cout when I get home.

I think you mainly want to avoid stripping the screw or losing it inside the injector, as mentioned above.

The skimmer is working great now that it has been cleaned.

As a mod, you could put some epoxy on the head of that screw that would extend past the width and prevent it from screwing in too far. Once that epoxy has hardened, cutting a slit for a screwdriver would be easy...Just a thought.

What I'm getting out of all these posts is that the depth of the screw isn't affecting the skimming performance is that right?

I'm really really glad I found this thread today. I'm making a trip up to atlanta this weekend to see my mom and she has been complaining that her Aqua C hasn't been skimming hardly anything lately. I'm guessing injector now.

I'd also like to know how far to screw the screw in b/c I think she has adjusted it to try to get it to work better. Does the screw height even effect the skimmer?

Thanks guys!!
