I have two questions concerning the aqua c remora skimmer. I am looking to upgrade a 55 g fresh to salt. I have decided on the aqua c remora for a hang on skimmer. I don't have the best plumbing skills and think I will hold off on a sump for now. My question is should I go with the aqua c rated for up to 75 gal or the one 75 gal and over. Also which pump does everyone prefer? If I upgraded later I thought I could use the bigger one, but didn't know if that would be overdoing it now. The other questions is I have a canopy and am wondering if the skimmer will fit under the canopy or it it far enough on the back of the tank that it will stick up behind the canopy. I don't want to order something that won't fit. Does anyone have a canopy and one of these skimmers that could advise?

I have the regular Remora (not the pro) on my 55g and it seems to work pretty well. It's the only skimmer I've had, so I don't have anything to compare it to. It pulls some nasty green/brown crap and I have to empty the cup every 5-6 days.

As for a canopy, I don't have one so I can't say if the skimmer would fit under yours. You will need about 3-4 inched of room behind your tank for the skimmer to fit. Depending on how high you set the collection cup, it will likely stick up around 4-6 inches from the trim of your tank.

Also, I upgraded my pump to the MJ1200.
 
Thanks! That picture was more detailed than the ones I had seen and I can see the small feet at the bottom that would go against the tank. I have no problem with clearance in the back, I was just worried about it fitting under the canopy. Now I see it doesn't have to. What does someone think about the two sizes. Should I go up to 75 g size or over 75 g size. I feel like the difference in price for the two that I could use the 75g and over size. Any thoughts?
 
With skimmer you always want to go bigger. I'm using the AquaC Remora Pro (w/ Rio 1400 and preskimmer) on a 55 gallon and I don't think its pulling out as much as I would like.

I've been using mine for over 6 months and wouldn't really recommend it.
 
I have one on my 55 and it works fine. I had a cheap one when I first set up the tank and it was very bad. It had a mind of it's own and would go crazy and overflow, very messy. I did a lot of research before I got the Aqua c and it seems to be the best out there for hang on skimmers. I have to empty it every other day, It does produce micro bubbles in the tank for about a month before it brakes in and stops. I would get the skimmer box attachment to go with it. It gets all that crap off the top of the water. You will need that if your not using an overflow and a sump.
 
Unfortunately, there are very few decent HOB skimmers. The reason the Remora gets good reviews is a) there is little competition. b) most people who like them have not used a good skimmer and dont have anything to compare to. Check the lighting/equipment forum where people have more skimmer experience and you will see they are not well thought of.

If you wanted to use an "in tank" skimmer instead of a HOB, I would highly recommend the Tunze DOC 9010. It will outskim any Remora by a mile. I think it is the best skimmer available for a sumpless system, and can be used in sump down the road. If you must use HOB, the Deltec MCE600 is widely regarded as the best HOB skimmer. I set one up recently have have mixed opinion on it, but still way better than a Remora.

Some people have also reported good results with the D&D Typhoon and it is dirt cheap. I have never used one.

There is also the Coralife Super Skimmers which can work well, but are hard to dial in and have a habit of overflowing.
 
Thanks for the info. Now I don't know what to get. I am trying to take my time and get the right equipment to start with. I hadn't read all those bad reviews. I had mostly seen good reviews about the Aqua C. Anyone else had any luck with a good hob skimmer. I would rather save a little longer and get a good one than get something that doesn't do the job.

I have an auca c remora on my 20g Tall, it works fine...obviouslyt you can spend 300 and get a better skimmer, and if you have the money, i would..
though i wouldnt reccommend getting a remora for your sz of tank, they do work fine
 
I hate to take up any tank space to a skimmer, but I guess I could hide it with rock or something so it didn't show so much. Do you know how much room is would take up?
 
Read a little about the Tunze. Have you had experience with this one. It doesn't seem like it would take up much space in the tank being only 5 inches wide. This would probably be quieter I guess also. I don't know much about skimmers, but it seems logical. Everyone complains about the noise of the Aqua C. My tank is in the living room and wouldn't want somethink noisy in there. I get a little annoyed when my water gets low in my freshwater tank and dribbles loudly. Cany anyone comment on the Tunze?
 
It doesn't take up any more space than a RR overflow. Basically, 4.5" x 5" x 17" tall. It will outskim any HOB overflow that I know of and is dead silent. The Tunze will pull out more in a day than the Remora in a week.

Another thing to consider. It is impossible for it to overflow and leak outside of the tank.

I think there are a couple of people in the lighting/equipment forum who have upgraded from a remora to the DOC. Put up a Remora Vs Tunze post there and you may get some feedback.

Do you think I could go with the next size down or should I stay with the one you sent the pic for? I am liking this idea more and more and I like the idea of it being quiet and being able to use it in a sump later if I like. I was also worried about how a hob would fit with my canopy. This would eliminate the problem.

The 9010 comes with everything you need for in tank or in sump. I think it also pulls more air and has a bigger cup.

You should also visit the Tunze forum and take a look around there.
