Aquapod 24 MODS???

What basic mods are needed to make the aquapod 24 work great? I know the changing of the main pump to a MJ 900 is one of the first things. Any other ones?

You can but a hydor flow deflector on the output of it. Take out the rings and bioballs and place some liverock, if your looking for a skimmer sapphireaqautics has a new design that fits in the chambers of an aquapod and everyone is loving it.

I thought I read somewhere that people add another pump in the first chamber and drill a hole in the plastic wall. Also isnt there something about sealing off the bottom vents?

the mods i did to mine are : 2x Maxi-Jet 900's / Hydor-Flo on the stock location / 2x 60mm Vantec Stealth Fans / 2x 50mm Cyber Coolers Fans on the feeding lid. im gonna be taking the stock hood off soon tho because im getting the Sunpod 150w HQI light. the mods i made work great. also another thing to do is switch the 2 bulbs around so that the fans come on with the actincs and off with the actinics. heres some pics

notice the hydor on the stock location and the loc-lines on the otherside.

I'm just setting one of these up as well. Yesterday I replaced that loud little fan with two quiet fans. I didn't want to wait to mailorder vantechs so went down to a big electronics surplus store and got a couple of fans there. They have a power supply set up so I was able to test about 6 different brands and got two nice quite ones

I'm going to replace the stock pump with an MJ1200 I think but not going to add a second pump or change lighting. I'll be doing some softies and LPS, no SPS so I think I'll be OK with the stock lighting and one pump.

Hopefully I will not have any heat issues. I may take a dremel to the hood and remove every-other plastic piece from the fan ports - I think that would improve air flow a lot. It still will not pull much air from the water surface though so may not help much with evap cooling. I have the fans mounted with one pulling air in and the other pushing air out.

I'm not planning to use any of the filter media that came with it. I think I'm just going to load the back first chamber with LR rubble.

Here're my mods since a few people have asked:

With 4 lights (new ballasts either side of the left-most fan), heat was an issue. The fan blowing on the water is a 120V fan that moves has the same cross-sectional area as the low profile DC fan that came stock, but it is just the right thickness to go between the clear cover and the unused grate on top of the hood. While the evaporation is ~1/2 gallon per day, it really keeps temps down. I also drilled some holes along the front black plastic piece between the front most "stock" bulb and the feeding hood. The other fan under the clear cover directs air drawn in from the stock fan forward and out those holes to cool the ballasts and the front bulb. On warm days, I prop open the feeding hood, but usually there are enough cracks between the hood and the top of the tank to vent the air. HTH.

sjm1978, did you replace the stock pump with a MJ900? Also, did you put the extra pump (attached to the locline) in the first chamber or plumb it over from the third chamber where the other pump is?

there is two maxi-jet 900's one in the first chamber and one in the stock location. i use the stock pump that came with the tank to mix my sw for weekly water changes. i also broke off every other tab total about 4-5 where the water flows to the back. so i could bring the water level down in the main part of the tank. the two maxi-jets were pushing alittle to much water and the water wasent flowing to the back fast enough. so the water in the front was to high.
