Aquarium glass covers

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about glass covers on the aquarium. The reason I ask this is because of salt creep. Over time it always gets on the glass covers and because of the lights it seem to always dull the glass which of coarse reduces light. Does anyone not use glass covers and if so do you have a problem with water evaporation. I imagine you use suspended lights over your aquarium. Any input would be appreciated. thanks.

i use hanging fixtures and dont have any huge problems with evaporation i do my weekly top up thats bout it. glass covers are a pain IMO

I got rid of my glass covers for egg crate covers, and have absolutely no regrets. I would recommend this to everyone. It has solved a few issues, including overheated tank, salt creep, maintenance, gas exchange.

Furnman, you can buy eggcrate at places like Home Depot. They might not call it that, though. Ask for lighting diffuser, and they'll know what you're talking about.

About salt creep on the glass, I just take them off and scrub them down when they start getting dirty. It's fast and easy. I have some fish that are prone to jumping/slithering out that are able to fit through eggcrate, and I'm not willing to risk anything.

There are definitely some fish I would not advise using eggcrate with, but for most it's a great fix. I'd definitely use it if some of my fish couldn't get through.

As the other stated, I got mine from Lowes for about $10 a sheet. The stuff looks like this:

You can relatively easily cut it to fit your aquarium top.

I also just use a 72" compact fluorescent light strip that sits right on top of the egg crate, and I have no problems with it.
