The Alaska SeaLife Center, a non-profit organization in Seward, Alaska, is accepting application packets for internship opportunities in the aquarium department. The Alaska SeaLife Center is dedicated to understanding and maintaining the integrity of the marine ecosystem of Alaska through research, rehabilitation, conservation and public education. This is a full time position for twelve weeks available in the spring and summer sessions. Duties include assisting in the daily care and maintenance of the Center’s fish and invertebrate collection in a research oriented setting.

Job Summary: This position introduces basic animal care and husbandry techniques. Candidate is responsible for assisting in the daily care and maintenance of the Center’s fish and invertebrate collection, life support systems and exhibit development.

Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university or a recent graduate with a primary area of study in the field of Fisheries, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Aquariums or other life science related fields. Applicants must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction, and have effective communication skills. Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds. Applicants must possess the ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment, and be available to work weekends and holidays. Public speaking skills are highly encouraged. Proof of current, within one year, Tuberculosis skin test and Tetanus booster, or physician’s exemption is required.

Duties Include:
• Assisting in the care of Alaska fishes, invertebrates and algae in exhibit settings and holding tanks.
• Daily diet preparations and feeding diets to marine organisms.
• Routine cleaning of exhibits, food prep room and service areas.
• Assisting aquarium staff in development and installation of new aquatic displays.
• Monitoring system conditions and water quality testing.
• Assisting the aquarium staff in collecting specimens in the field.
• Learning taxonomic identifications of marine specimens of plants and animals.
• Maintaining current and accurate records on animal health and behaviors.
• Performs other duties relating to the Center’s goals and mission statement as required.

This is an unpaid position; housing and a food stipend are available for individuals participating in our internship program. Interns are responsible for all travel expenses.
