Are Firefish jumpers?

They're some of the best jumpers out there. When I was new to marine aquariums, I purchased one and had read that they were jumpers and so was careful to have a covered aquarium. Unfortunately, I didn't think that acclimating him in a bucket was a bad idea. The bucket was only about half way full with water but of course he jumped out. My dog almost ate him but he was rescued just in time.

I used 1/4" clear mesh and kept a firefish for about 6 months. I was feeding the tank one evening and took the cover off. While I had my back turned he sailed out of the tank onto the floor. I did not see him and when I turned around, I stepped on him. I decided I didn't like them that much after all and moved on to something else.

Talk about jumpers!
I have my tank covered with eggcrate, then on top of the eggcrate I tied screening - you know, the stuff that goes on your windows to keep musquitos and stuff out. Well, I HAD a 1x1 1/2 inch opening for me to put in nori for the tangs, well, one night, my fish-sitter left the opening uncovered, next day, she found the little dried up fish! I would say that the only SAFE cover for them would be something that is completely covered, like a nano cube with lid.
Firefishes are not only good jumpers, they are also very skittish which makes them, well...jumpy.
Oh, in case you are thinking of getting more than one. Please don't. I had five and they did make a wonderful display, but then they paired up and I thought I was lucky as I had two pairs and a single. Well, One of the paired ones jumped, so now I had one pair and two singles, long story short, I have one firefish now. :hmm4:
