are my fry doomed?

Just found 50 or so fry in my seahorse tank. Wasn't expecting them so I have nothing set up. I've removed and placed in a small tank but am I just prolonging the inevitable. No bbs and stores are closed today here for the holiday.

Start some artemia cysts hatching right away and you should have some hatched within 18 hours. The fry will be ok for approximately 24 hours but must be fed as soon as possible after that.

Good luck.

H reidi will need rotifers. This is some of the smallest fry.
Is there any way to locate some right away? Perhaps a friends has some?
The fry will not last long if you have to order the food.

Don't you also have H erectus Oakie?

I haven't done this before. But I have read that reidis need rotifiers at birth. I bet you can find some someplace. You need to start up a culture which I believe works very similar to keeping brine. You'll need some live phytoplankton or something even better. Most people with experience use the paste that you can buy online. But in the meantime you'll need to use whatever you can find.

They won't be able to hitch for a few days and I've read it can be days before they cane at baby brine. But I would start the brine just in case. They usually have as many as several hundreds babies at once. So maybe if there really is only 50 or so they are bigger than they usually are.

Have you covered your pumps and such?

I have one Erectus.

These guys are a bit larger than 1/4".

I've moved them into a 5 gallon tank and have a small pump blowing in some air.

Oakie,
I really hate to say this but I am afraid these little ones won't make it.

H reidi fry are some of the most difficult fry to raise, even for the most experienced. Not being prepared for them makes it even more difficult.

If you cannot locate the appropriate food for them within the time frame I mentioned earlier, they will not survive.

If they are good size try the newly hatch bbs. Mine took to it very quickly. Then as soon as you can get some rotifers give them both.

Hi Oakie, I also have H. Reidi`s .. mine are having babies every 15th day after the last fry born... Don`t feel bad, I lost my first 2 batches.. Now I have 6 fry.. alive 3 days now. They are snicking at live rotifers.. Water quality was my first problem.. So I seeded a sponge filter in the parent tank for a little over a week... there`s a lot of choices even in an air driven sponge.. Dirt magnet is one, dr`s fosters and smith sells oxygen sponge filters . they must be kept off the floor of the tank or the fry can get lodged under the sponge and die. Hope this helps... I`m also trying a new set up with a tank divider, siliconed in so I can put heater, filters etc. in one end away from fry.. will see how that works.. I will post later with results.. Don`t like nothin to whip me!!! I will find a solution!!!

This whole thing scares me silly.

I'm having a water quality problem this week due to a bad ro/di unit. In fact, I should get off my duff and go buy some water.

Goodluck with all those babies :)
