Are Sea Horses Really Hard to Keep?

I just can't seem to get into this reef keeping stuff like Gary. I want a reef tank with Sea Horses. Are they really hard to keep?

My problem with this whole thing is I am not able to get what I want. I want a String Ray but I have to have a huge tank. I want Sea Horses but you have to target feed them.

Is there anyway to keep a Sea Horse in a reef tank?

Seahorses do fine in a dedicated tank. I never target fed the pair I had. I just dumped mysis shrimp in the tank. Seahorses are slow moving and get oucompeted for food in community tanks. A small tank with just seahorses, pipefish, mandrin gobies and corals do quite well.
Good luck

Feeding is probably less a problem then temp(Tank bred, not wild caught, thats another discussion), they tend to get problems at normal reef temps, need colder water/chiller. A healthy reef would have too much flow, compitition for food and stinging things that the horse might grab on to. Seahorses need a seahorse/pipefish tank with sea grasses and algaes to hold onto

Thanks for your replies. You all have pretty much given Gary an "I told you so" to use on me. It seems that I will would have to have a few different tanks in order to get what I want. Sounds pretty costly. I'm sure Gary would be in heaven though.

Roll, I will be sure to check out that forum. Thank you.

I have thought about doing a seahorse tank and the one rule of thumb I have heard is that if the food does not float into their mouths, they will never get it! I thought of doing a pure seahorse tank in some sort of nano-cube. That way the dedicated tank costs would be minimized. As Owsi stated, I would not do corals, but the seahorses themselves are interesting enough to keep most anyone occupied.

seahorse.org is the place to go. They arnt hard to keep. It depends on what u want. danU from RC sells erectus (sp?) and kuda all CB. No need to target feed. Just put like a little lid or plate in the tank and put the mysis on that. A 20gal high is alright but a 29gal or 30gal xxtall is way batter. You cant put them with any stinging corals like SPS LPS and clams (may close on the tail) I got a 30gal cube i am setting up for them and maybe when its ready we can spilt shipping. I been looking into them for along time now and am also ready to do it. I have kept pipe fish. Was going to keep dwarfs but never got around to it lol.

P.S I hope that helps and sorry for bad grammer i am half asleep.

So Here's a dumb question. If I set up a Sea Horse tank will I need all of the same equipment needed for a reef tank. Such as lighting, filter, power heads and chiller?

If I decided to go the SeaHorse route, could I set up a tank with fake decorations or will I have to have live rock and such? This is just to start out with. Maybe later I could add live rock and coral.

I'll post the same question on the Sea Horse forum.

should not require near the intensity. Not trying to keep corals thriving. You could sitll use a skimmer, but consistent water changes are probably more than enough.

I just checked out that thread. Looks nice. Thanks for the info. I'll have to ask hubby what all the abreviations are. Still new at this and all.

I have a seahorse tank set up with 2 pair seahorses,2 clams, about 10 corals, pair of Osc. clowns,2 turbo snails and a small queen qonch.30 gallon Oceanic cube with 30 lb. live rock, remora hang on skimmer and a whisper filter. Been up for over 2 years and doing great. The temp.is 81 because of the corals and clams also just feed frozen mysis shrimp, let them thaw for about 5 min. and throw them in.

Ive been keeping seahorses for about 6 months and all 4 of them are doing great.I have a reef tank with LPS and a clam. Water circulation is pretty fast but seahorses stay from the middle down.I turn off pump and skimmer for about 30min. to feed them (works good)
