Not an attorney but I do know the process will depend upon the value of the item in dispute, small claims court is for stuff under $1700(guestimate its been a few years) basically all you do is file and pay a fee to file which is cheap (under $100).

I thought small claims court was uner $2000? I'm not a lawyer either.

It could be, my point was value was under that amount a small claims type solution is much cheaper than hiring a lawyer, in my line of work we use lots of lawyers for contracts and I have to budget $300-$400 per hour dependign on the firm , most have minimums.

Small claims is under $5000. Also, if you paid by credit card, you can file a dispute which you'll normally win, especially if the other company can't provide proof of delivery.

If it's a company you could try contacting the better buisness bureau or another consumer rights watchdog.

If it's an individual you bought something from then I'd think about a lawyer that can draft a letter that may scare the person into repayment.
