Are these Zoa's dead?

I just got a sweet deal on a piece of LR with some GSP, Xenia, and some Zoas on it... part of the colony looks great but the other part the owner said was up against some Frogspawn. Will these repopen or are they dead? Sorry about the bad pic... also any idea of what type they are?

Hard to say what they are without them being open. I have had zoas close like that for a week or so and then open up and be fine and I have had other zoas close never open and melt away. Might just have to just wait and see. How long have they been in your tank?

Just got them last night so been in the tank about a day now... they were closed like that when I got them from the owner... half the colony was/is thriving but as mentioned above the previous owner said he had frogspawn right next to them and he thought they might have been getting stung by it... this is my first set of zoas so I am not quite sure how long they might stay clammed up...

I say they will be fine just give them a few days to get acustom to ur tank and your water

Quick update... I guess the original owner was right... the whole colony has opened up... the colors on the ones that were closed dont look so great but hey at least they are still alive... Thanks...

sometimes they will close up for a long time and eventually reopen. i had some closed for months because the lights were too old and needed to be changed. once the bulbs were replaced they actually opened to my amazement.

Yeah I was a bit surprised they opened up nicely... seem to be thriving also... I have a Xenia perched right on top of it that I need to remove but other than that its looking good... now if I could just get them to color up some I would be totally stoked.

Give them some time, and they should be cool... also take a look for pests

No I havent... is there a reason I should? They are all open and doing well (except for the one that has the xenia growing on top of it...)

Nah they are looking good now... I think the original owner was right that the frogspawn he had was placed too close and was irritating the Zoas. When I put them in my tank I gave them more space and they seem to be happy and healthy... The only issue I have with my corals now is since I put those LR's in my hammer coral has been drawn up and looking like crap. Im not sure if there is some chemical warfare going on but I am about to do another water change and will continue to monitor.

Its actually pretty crazy just how hardy zoas can be. I had a colony that kept getting stung by a growing colony of lavender hairy shrooms. I have had them in my tank for 4 yrs. They were closed for the first 3.5 yrs. 6 mos ago they started to open again and they were complotoly bleached (actually translucent). They ar about half way recovered now and are beginning to color up.

Yeah I have noticed that lol... this same rock I bought had Xenia, Zoas, GSP, and a feather duster on it... the guy who owned it was REALLY into fragging and selling.. he had a colony of watermelon zoas that I wanted to buy but they sold before I got to him... well LOA and BEHOLD my daughter spied 4 small growths on the side of this same rock... and I will be damned I have a developing colony of watermelon zoas!!! so for $30 i got 4 different types of corals and a good sized LR to boot...

I have never owned Xenia until this purchase and also read about how hearty they are and yes sir... I have 2-3 new growths on rocks no where near the colony I bought... I caught my emerald crab munching on them the other day and I guess he has been "planting" pieces of them around the tank for me... I hope there is a market for Xenia around here because the way these things are taking off I could make a ton of money!!

if i were you i'd get rid of the xenia asap. cut em off and put superglue over the cuttings. they grow vry very very very rapidly in the rite conditions and will surely become a nucinse. trust me my friend. they look real good at first and then they get a foothold and overgrow every coral you have. trust me. i started with one head. last week I cut 30 heads off and still have about 30 left. they will grow like a bad algae problem shading every coral you have from light and view especially if you just got it and its already reproducing.
