so I was thinking either a canon 30D or a nikon D40x. What do you think ?

My pics seem to all turn out reflected and kinda fuzzy..
I've tried no flash, flash, turning off acitinics because they come out so blue, different angles, and turning off lights in the room.
None of this makes much difference...

My camera sucks..it's only a kodak easy share. 5MP =/

I need a decent one.

Check in your existing camera's manual and see if you can set a custom white balance, than can help with the blue color cast.

Do you have a tripod?

DSLRs are great, but if camera shake or white balance settings are causing your frustration you'll have the same issue even if you buy a new one. DSLRs also typically do less in camera processing than point and shoot models, so in order to get the most out of them you'll need to understand more about how the camera functions and post processing.

This is a good site for learning the basics: http://www.ximinasphotography.com/lessons/

Good luck!

Agreed. While a DSLR and the right lens will help you get that macro shot you're yearning for, you need to have a good understanding of white balance, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and how they all affect each other before even that can help you.

I highly recommend mastering your current camera first. You may actually surprise yourself!

Start by going through the manual and understanding all of the options available to you. Pay close attention to the minimum focus distance. Also making sure your camera lens surface is parallel to the glass.

well soon i'll be in art school and will be taking photography as part of it so i'm sure that will help ;)

but i will read that site aswell =)

I have a Kodak Easy Share. It's nearly impossible to take a decent tank shot with it.

I now have a Canon Rebel XTi and its the bomb digity!

lol !!

I hate this camera =( it's fine if you're just going to play around take simple pics but forget it if you want anything decent...=/

I don't think i'll be getting a new one for at least a few months tho.
Do you know anything about the powershot ? They have one at the walmart here and it's an 8MP and it's about $430.

I had a Kodak easy share for years (still have it for a back up - hazardous conditions oh well camera). I upgraded to a 40D recently w/ 24-70 f/2.8L...oh man HUGE jump. Love it! :D Just remember that with DSLRs, the most important item is the lenses. After months of research, I determined Canon had the best lens lineup and went with them. Nikon has IS incorporated right in the camera, Canon puts it in the lenses instead. Some of the lenses don't have the IS, such as my 24-70, but I could have gotten a 24-105 with IS instead, and my future 70-200 f/2.8 IS will have it. :) Nikon and Canon are both great, but they have their ups and downs. For action shots go Canon, for still portraits Nikon probably has the upper hand. In both cases the differences are debatable but once you go with one brand, you are pretty much stuck with it, so choose wisely. (After you buy $5000 worth of lenses over the years, they would be scrap silicate if you switch. One nice thing about the lenses though, they hold their value. You could probably sell them for a 10-15% loss.) I am however happily stuck with Canon. :)
