ASM G3 vs DAS BX-1 Skimmer

With all that skimmer talk, I might as well ask this now. I am going to set up a 50 gal (around 70 - 80gal total) and was wondering if I should just use my ASM G3 or get a DAS BX-1?

It's gonna be a mixed reef with 2 clowns, a divided wrasse, a midas blenny and a longnose hawkfish. Maybe a firefish or 2.

Thanks!

You should definetly get the DAS BX-1 and sell me the G3 for like.......150????

kewlworm maybe you can answer a Q for me I have 9 3/4 inches X 14 inches in my sump will that accomidate the g3? it would be the new g3 your help is greatly appreciated.

i've got the das ex-2. best skimmer i've owned. Love it. everyone that was over recently saw the skimmate it took out. nasty stuff. never had an asm though. good luck

after i modded the hell outta my asm, it performed about the same as my upgraded h&s skimmer.

the only big dif for me was the asm was alot more finicky when it came to sticking my hand in the tank, feedings. took alot more longer to start producing skimmate again.

im basing this off the pump, which are extremely similar as the DAS.

Hmm...I guess they both are good. I don't plan on upgrading, but who knows what will happen. I always wanted a 120gal anyway. lol. Maybe I should just stick to the G3.

Bawla, what kinda mods did you do to ur ASM?

Thanks guys!

Damn! a g-3 on a 50g tank! I dont know anything about the bx-1 but i have a asm g-3 on my 180g.

I have 4 decent sized tangs and 5 other fish. I definitely overfeed my fish and feed my corals heavy and my nitrates are always at or near 0-5 with only a monthly 35g change.

If you already have a g-3, imo it would be a total waste of money to get another skimmer. The g-3 should be MORE than enough to handle a total volume of 80g.

Yea...i can either sell the G3 and get the DAS BX1, but I don't want to go through the selling and buying later if I decide to upgrade to 120g. I have everything needed from my 125g. Might even use my mag9.5 on this 50g too lol.

the usual type stuff, it was a stock asm g2 skimmer. i swapped to the bigger sedra 5000(same as yours) converted it to recirculating, meshmodded the needlewheel, and increased the air venturi hole.

its a hassle, but id personally like the das over the asm. its probbably a smaller footprint, as well as having a small chamber that you can run some type of media in.

How did you convert it to recirculating? Do you just increased the tip of the air venturi tube? I am probably gonna put a gate valve on it also.

yea, i did that too.

you just need 2 uniseals 1 for the pump and 1 for the skimmer feed.

air venturi i just drilled out the tube a little bit to increase the air flow on the venturi.

Hey, Mike, I don't use AIM...sry. I will call you today or monday. I haven't have time to look at the ballast yet.
