ASM Skimmer Comments?

Ok, my Euroreef has become underrated for my setup and the wife already has a 180 on the brain. I was looking around and came across the ASM skimmer. From what I am reading, it looks pretty good, and people seem to be happy with it.

As with everything, you want to buy the best, but its going to be hard convincing Michele that spending $1000 on a skimmer is a good deal, being I still have to pickup a calcium reactor. The ASM series have some really good prices, so I was wondering if its worth it.

Anyone have any comments on this?

Thanks.

Joe

The only thing with ASM is they over rate the tank size,

Example: you have a 100 gal tank a ASM G1X is rated for 150 gal but really would be good for up to 100 gal so I would recommend a G2 which is rated for 200 Gal.

Just go one size bigger than whats rated for your tank size and you"ll be fine

I am extremely happy with mine(asm g-2), I really like the ease of cleaning, my water is clear and I still get alot of skimmate. I did have to replace the cone due to one of the latches breaking(9months old) during a cleaning other than that it has worked perfectly and would recommend purchasing one.

I'm looking at either the G4X or the G5

The G4 is one pump and the G 5 is two.

I'm not to sure what they are rated, and to lazy to check right now  but good rule of thumb is you can never over skim go with the biggest unit you can afford/can fit into required space :D

a g3 should be enough for your system and you can do the mod of the gate valve and recirculation mod , by the way you said you need a cr lmk i have a whole system that i need to get rid of lmk thanks

Ralph,

Question. I want to make this purchase once, so when I upgrade to a 180 and a 100 gallon sump, you feel that the G3 is enough to handle that, I was leaning to the G4X.

Their site states the G3 is good for 250 gallons. Does that mean 250 that are under a specific bioload, or does that entail the entire system.

i have two g-3's on my 150 and they make 40 oz's of muck per week...i am breakin down my 150 so if you want one i will unload it for...200$
i replaced the needle wheel two months ago...runs like new...
i also have a korralin reactor setup never used...300$

Appreciate the offer Max, but I am looking for a larger ASM.

As for the Reactor, need to make that purchase later on, piggy bank running low.

If you plan on getting a 180 and 100 gal sump that would be 280 total water volume so I would recommend a G4X or the G5

i would go be the g5 if you going to have a large bio load i would definite bigger , did you look for a MRC mr-3 there great skimmer and they are beckett they would be able to handle a system like yours with no problems look into it and see what you think

Ralph

i think the g4s will be your best bet, i going to use a g3 for a 120g with a 40g sump, so the g4x will be good for you i think

do what you think is best but i have used g-5's on 600 gallon tanks and that was sufficient...g-3 is rated for 300 gallons.
i use it on a 150 with no problems...i have to dump the cup weekly...you will spend consideribly more for a g-5.
my g-3 for 200$ is a good price...but either way good luck with everything.

Another thing to consider is wattage, is it a concern too you and your wallet?

multiple Sedra's can get power hungry, A friend switched out his G6 (to cut down on elec. costs) for a BK250 external, although thats a huge sum of money difference upfront. He sees it as an investment.

Personally I would skip ASM altogether and check out what H&S and Deltec have to offer, personally I know of someone who is changing out his APF600 soon if your interested. The added benefit is that they run eheim pumps and are very energy efficient and stronger than the sedras, with more air LPH intake if im not mistaken, not to mention their customer service is top notch.

Do a search theyre great skimmers

Does anyone know where to get pricing on DAS Skimmers. I know that Trop has them, but they are out of stock and will not quote pricing. So if anyone knows of another place, I would appreciate it.

In regards to the BubbleKing, not even a thought, its beyond reachable in the money department.

I have looked at the Deltec AP701, and although I have read alot about the them, and its all good, but the price tag hurts abit, $1000+, and I know that the long term electrical benefit is good, but I would be willing to pay alittle more a month in electrical to have a lower original purchase.

The H&S that I would need is the HS 200 (300 gallon) and this one runs $1000+, so this is in the ballpark of the Deltec, and for that, I'd go Deltec.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the site, only thing is they don't tell you any information about the skimmer regarding footprint size or recommendations for take size.

Anyone have any place to get this.

Joe
