Asparagus in a refugium

I've been told that the Asparagus that one buys in the grocery store (love the stuff myself, grows wild around my place) is basicly a salt water plant that grows in many shallow sump type areas.

My questions are;

1. Can anyone verify this?
2. Would it be a good plant in a refugium for nutrient uptake
3. How deep of a sandbed?
4. Has anyone done it? How do you do it?

Just started my 20g tall refugium (picture attached). I want to give it 6 months or so to mature the sandbed before I add any sea grasses, but I do eventually want to add sea grasses.

Any thoughts?
