I understand these pumps are cheap and really I do not expect years out of them so I have a couple of spares. So when my ATO pump failed last week I just got my spare and replaced it. Curiosity got the better of me so snapped it open today. Obviously has been running for quite some time like this as it only been out of the tank a couple of days. Amazing that it ran like this, maybe the only reason it finally failed is one arm of the brush has disappeared.
Inspecting it reveals that the blue cap has rusty residue even where the cap is "supposed" to be sealed against the body. I think this one is around 12 months old.
I have another 2 spares on order so all good. However I may just break open the next longest serving pump and see if that too has an issue like this.
