automatic water change question

I am in the process of trying to automate water changes, i.e., just open/close valves. My original plan was to use my return pump to do this and just pump out the volume in the return section of the sump. However, this volume is only going to be ~ 15 gallons ... which is a bit low.

I guess I could desing a way to drain the display ... or do two sequential 15 gallon changes ...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Divert the overflow pipe to the drain, and add new water to the first section of your sump. Then you'll be draining the old water, and adding the new water in it's place, keeping the pump wet, the new and old water will mix a little in the sump, but it'll have to make it all the way to the display before you can lose it to the drain... So basically you can fill up to your full sump volume with new water.

thanks for the reply boiler ... I like the idea. However, I am going to actually have to pump water to get it to the drain, i.e., the drain lines will have to run above the height of the tank.
