Does anyone know the growth rate of baby's breath favia? I recently got a 2 head frag and they look great. I cant wait till they start growing on my main rock.

I started with 3-4 heads back in August last year and now I have 12+ heads and it is growing really well. Its a gorgeous coral.

Also how often are you feeding it?

I don't purposely feed the favias in my tank directly, I suppose they might grow faster if I did but I think they get a lot from the regular tank feedings. I keep my baby's breath on the bottom of the tank in the direct light, about 27" under the lights.

Are all Baby's Breaths the same? I have this one and its starting to take off. He has been ABUSED, I'd put it in the indestructible category. Color/speckles are really starting to come out finally - and growth is pretty quick since I mounted it. It grew even while rolling around in the sand for a few months.

David,
I don't know about that picture at Exotics. It isn't very good if it is the Baby's Breath favia. I know there were a number of colonies that came in with the bluish outer ring, pink inner ring and yellow eyes. I got mine from Hugo who sold his colony to Matt at Reefready.net. There is a great picture on Matt's site that seems a better representation of the Baby's Breath. That is what mine looks like, except I can't get the blue to go that baby blue color. It stays more greenish/blue. I have a lot of green in it as well because as new heads are forming they have green and then they develop the other colors as they mature. Here are a couple of shots of my frag from 5 months ago. I need to take an updated shot, lol. The heads are melting out onto the rock all around the original frag. I actually counted over 20 heads on mine the other night. I think they get growing pretty good if they are happy.

Comparison of the Baby's Breath(bottom) with the LE Sunset Favia(top)...see the green in the Baby's Breath, new heads developing.

slojmn - as always, awesome comparison shots!

Here's a shot of my frag of the Baby's Breath that I just got a few days ago from exoticfrags.us, I agree with slojmn in that the pic on the website isn't the greatest. I think my pic shows a little more of the colors within the eyes. I did inquire about the lineage of the frags, and they are directly from the same mother colony that Hugo got his from

vapormd, That is a much better shot of the Baby's Breath from exotics. I'd agree that it looks the same...it is that telltale lavendar/pink inner ring that sets this favia apart from the rest :D. Nice picture.

I think that light intensity placement plays a role in the color also. Mine looks just like vapormd's.

Alica, yours looks awesome!

No flash, frankly I never know what the heck I am doing with my camera. If I take stuff out of the tank and shoot them on the Euro bracing in a container I get decent enough shots that are true to color. I am still learning what the heck to do with my camera setttings a year after getting it. I get great shots of people and sporting events, I get lmostly sucky shots of my tank stuff, but sometimes they turn out :).

Mine isn't growing that fast. I started with about 12 polyps 2 months ago, and nothing new. I can start to see it spreading new tissue. Thats about it.

However when I initially got the frag, there was a partial polyp dangling off. It was really really small. I'd say it was a about 1/8th inch. There was not color, you could barely see it. Anyways sliced it off and glued it to a piece of rock. This is what I have now.

Funny hows it more pink then the original colony it came from.

I got one of those frags from exotic at the begining of December. I took it off the plug and mounted it in some epoxy on a rock.

I have it in the middle of the tank, just above halfway up under T-5s. It looks similar to the pics posted but certainly has morphed to it's own color in my tank. I think it's getting a little too much light where I have it. The part facing the light is faded along the edges. The centers are more of a tan color. When you look straight down on it, it has a baby blue color that doesn't stand out as much from the sides.

So far since then it has started melting onto the rock on the bottom side of the frag where it's shaded (by itself) and it appears to be two small heads that have grown with good color.

Looks really good under actinics but not as impressive under full spectrum. It doesn't have the colors like you see here. I may need to move it down.

I've only fed all the heads on it one time. It's somewhat hard to feed with the short feeders it has.

Here's a couple pics I just took of mine. This first one is through normal glass and it's about 6" back so it's a little grainy. If you look at the large middle head towards the bottom... everything below that is new growth since December 07.

Here's a shot looking down on it from the surface. I've got the white balance set so it shows the colors a little better. The centers are actually kind of pink/peach. You can see where the edge is faded on the top. The spot on the right where I pushed it into the epoxy never quite healed itself as it's still faded.

This is in the middle of the tank which gets the most intense light from the T-5s, for 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week. I think it's a little much because the bottom shaded part has a nice deeper color to it. HTH

IMHO the Babys Breath is prolly one of the most beautiful corals in the hobby to date, it is just so unique and eye catching, I remeber when i saw it on Matt's website, it just jumped off the page at me compared to everything else...here are a couple of shots that capture the beauty, of course the first one is from Reefready and the second is from Tyree, they capture the baby blue coloration very well
