Back after a long time

Hi all,

I've been out for a long time and I see this site has exploded since I was last here. I remember when it only had a 1000 members or so and now it is over 100,000. I feel like a newbie again after years of keeping tanks.

I had a pipe break about 5 years ago and ruined a room and about $5000 worth of live rock, corals, fish.

Anyway, I was hoping somebody would be willing to catch me up on the changes in the world since I've been gone. I used to run a 110 with mostly softies and a couple of LPS and SPS.

I'm looking at starting small again like a 30 gallon or so. Is there anything new in the lighting or filtration world?

Anyway, just wanted to hi to everyone and hoped somebody could spare a little time.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome back to the money pit we call a hobby . Lots of changes over the past 5 years and I wouldn't know where to begin.

Hey, welcome back. :) You joined a year before me, and I took a few years, but you can see I did a lot of catching up with posting when I got back...

I hear ya on the disaster thing. I had an awful experience with a power outage.

On new ideas, I hardly know where to start either. But just a hint... search for the longest threads with BB (bare bottom) vs. DSB (deep sand bed) in their title. You don't want to start bringing up the topic by accident, it's caused quite a shakeup here. :)

Well, in the last five years there've been a lot of significant changes in the quality of protein skimmers that are available....and the availablility of t5 lighting, which you might be interested in for the size of the tank and kinds of corals you're contemplating...and also the more extensive use of refugiums...there are others but I'd say those are some of the biggest changes over that number of years.

Re: Back after a long time

Go to the big tanks forum, I feel that's where the big advancements are.

My favorite is this: the 1700g stingray reef

A long thread, but I think this tank has all the latest. Big ugly skimmer, MH/T5/VHO lights, live sponges filter, PVC rock racks, and of course a 1700G tank in a privately own home and a blue-spotted stingray.

30 gal is ok i just started one myself
tank 50.00
whisper filter 25.00
192 watt coralife lunar aqualight 176.99 at aquacon.com
prizm pro deluxe skimmer 89.99 at foster&smith
and i already some sand and liverock from my other tanks, this is my clam only tank and it's doing nice so far started it about 3 months ago.

HaHaHa, please, start with a 100 if you can, if you start with a 30, all I can say is that within a year, you will want to upgrade :D
