Bad, bad day! Tank destroyed!

Acrylic can break. Less likely to break yes but Acrylic is the only tank to ever break on me. My 120 corner had the bottom front seam give out a year ago last christmas.

It was my worst nightmare. The stuff you only see in movies.

I saw that movie. In fact, I had the director's cut. After my 210 broke, I almost gave it all up. After about a week, I changed my mind, but went with a slightly smaller glass 180. I just pray that lightning doesn't strike twice.

Here is the climactic, post-apocalyptic scene from the movie.

I am sorry to hear that - don't give up and get back in the game!

I went with acrylic as above. Sure, it scratches easily, but if you are careful then you can really minimize scratches. :) BB makes it even easier!

Acrylic doesn't crack it just gives way at the seams especially when you get a tank of lower quality. No way would I go acrylic after seeing what people have to do to minimize scratches and they still get them anyway.

Both of those tank cracks look very similar. I too want to know, was either on styro? Were they both the kind that sit on a "frame", or directly glass to stand? Just curious. Were the stands on hardwood/carpet? Were they shimmed? Would hate to have this happen to me. Very sorry for your tank :(

The tank was sitting on a wooden stand. I believe that the tank had a black frame that went around the bottom. My tank was not on styro. My next tank will be set on plywood on the carpet. I still cannot believe this happened. What a mess! Even after having some VERY large fans on all night the carpet is still wet!

might want to run to your local grocery store and rent a carpet cleaner to suck all the water out of your carpet... if your just using fans, it's going to take forever, and you will still have salt in the carpet.

better yet, spend the 50 bucks to have a pro clean it for you.

Right after it happened we had a pro. cleaning crew come over. They sucked all the water out of the carpet already. They set up the fans last night and they are still running. They will be over tomorrow to replace the padding under the carpet.

How old was tank must tank companies have a 5 year warranty!! I had a brand new 56 cube that I set up for my son crack only 3 days after set up was level and only sand and water in it!!! So I know where you are coming from. But tank company sent new tank and is paying for all damage

I am wondering if these failures are due to air trapped in the glass during manufacturing that causes a week point in the glass. In my 180 gallon AGA I have a small bubble in the front glass, so small it was a year before I discovered it. This tank has been up almost four years now.... Knock on wood.

Eric,
Sorry to hear that, that'll be any reefer's worst nightmare. But i see that you're already working on rebuilding the whole thing. YOU'RE THE MAN!! Hope u'll make a comeback soon and this time it'll be bigger and better!!

Very sorry too! Something we all fear. I'm glad you were there to save the fish and corals.

I've got a large glass tank now. Had an acrylic before. I like both (ease of cleaning the glass... peace of mind from catastophies with the acrylic). To answer your question - if I ever have acrylic again, I will go with bare bottom and square walls (sand scratches and rounded acrylic is harder to clean). I like my DSB, but both systems can work and sand is a pain with acrylic. My advice - get a big refugium and go bare bottom - or only a thin coating of sand for looks.

Best of luck!

I had a 125 gallon from all-glass that did the same thing have not had a tank since, all glass replaced it under warranty, then I bought a glasscages 300 never did have water in that one and I heard that the bottom cracked on that( I sold it), and I know that my next one will definitly be a acrylic

Sorry for your loss but when buying a glass tank DEFINTALY dont go with anything under 5/8" of a inch for 90 gallons and even need thicker for 100+ gallons dont skimp and get thin glass. It'll end up biting you in the butt sooner or later.. I've always loved Oceanic tanks for this reason, they might cost 150 bucks more but i guarntee they wont shatter like that one did.
Hopefully you can find a good deal.. To bad you dont live near Pennslyvania (sp?) I went to That Fish Place to get my reef ready 90 gallon oceanic /w black oak trim and stand/and 12" tall cap made for halides for under $1,100 this was a steal considering the backwall was drilled for a closed loop setup and built to my specs.. The local fishstore wanted 2,700 for the same setup i just laughed and said to them " Guess I get to drive to pennslyvania and break in my new Nissan Titan "
hehe
Good luck man..
