bad tank builder

i just wanted to help out people who are looking for a tank builder.........don't buy from Gen at Kritter's Tank. He never deliever on time won't honor his warranty. He build me a tank and after 1 year the tank started to get stretch mark on the corners are starting to get longer and longer toward the middle of the tank. it's getting bigger by the day. and now my tank has a hairline crack on the top. i ask for his help but he said his warrany stated
"Kritter Products will repair or replace the product at our option." what should i do?

but here is what i got from his website :
Limited 5 Year Warranty

1. All Kritter products aquariums are warranted to the original purchaser for a period of five years from purchase date. Warranty covers defects in material and workmanship. Defects meaning imperfections in the product that impair its utility, and not aesthetics.

2. This warranty is expressly limited to the repair or replacement of products having defects. As long as defect occurs and is reported during warranty period. Kritter products will repair or replace product, at our option. Shipping and labor cost for aquarium removal and installation is not covered by this warranty.

are you serious? he won't fix it?

He seemed like a nice guy, in fact I was about to put an order in.

what kind of acrylic did he use?

i don't know about the acrylic but after a year the marks started to show and it never stop. i try to save money but it back fire.

how is your tank designed? Bent corners? what are it's dimensions? Eurobracing? what thickness of acrylic?

how did you go about calling him and asking him about it? your post seems a tad bit irrate, if you were irrate with him, i could understand him denying you at first

I've seen many large tanks with these stress cracks near the seems. I have yet to see one leak and have heard that it will not compromise the stregnth or integrity of the aquarium. That other hairline crack you mention near the top is a different story. The majority of the stregnth holding your aquarium together is the top, if used too thin a material then there is a problem and you could have the whole tank blow out on you. Unfortunetly, I have seen that. Try to bring him some pictures and hopefully he may change his tune.

hey smellyfish, you're pretty close to gen's place, he's in san carlos too I think.

but anyway, definately bring some pictures in. when I emailed him he didn't come off as one to say "no" without good reason. So you should probably talk to him some more, probably work something out =)

I've delt with Gen quite a bit, he's been overworked recently helping people out so I can see your complaint about time. However if you have a problem call him, he's great guy, and does all my custom work. I also know other people on this board have a very high opinion of him as well.

Bad Tank builder huh?

Bad Tank builder huh?

Hello reefers, this is the "bad tank builder"
The reefer in this post is upset from a court case of which he did not show up to. Case #4-06-sc-017599 Santa Clara Small claims court.
To make a long story short, the irrate person took half a year to follow through on promises made to trade labor for two other tanks made more recently.
The tank in question, the one under warranty has been up for approx 3 years. Under normal circumstances, the warranty would apply. The effort in which it took to get paid on the next two tanks was enough to void the former warranty.
Pls call more credible sources at your local aquarium store for realistic opinions about warranty issues.

(he will also have opinions about this person)
Thanks for all your support

havent been on here for awhile and happen to stumble on this post...id like to share my experience with kritter..

gen has always been a great builder to work with and i have nothing bad to say about his work. granted he is pretty busy and a small operation but he did mention up front before starting my project it would take some time to complete, which i totally understood and was totally willing to accept. custom jobs are very difficult to put a time frame on just like with custom cars so i wasnt sweating it.

anyhow, in short, gen went out of his way to build my dream tank and did everything i wanted w/out showing a bit of frustration after i changed mymind several times about the design of the tank. thats what i call customer service and going the extra mile to make a customer happy.

my 360(8x3x2 with euro bracing) is going strong and looks as good as the day i set it up a year ago. no bowing what so ever and the acrylic is as clear as can be. however, the sad thing is the tank still hasnt been converted to a full blown reef yet due my lack of motivation to start the project, which is a different topic.

perhaps the expert himself can talk about stress lines u sometimes see on the corners on tanks but ive seen this even on tanks made by those larger aquarium companies such as truvu...could be imperfections in the acrylic itself and not due to tank construction. cracks on tops could be due to a number or reason such as increase heat from halides and may be more due to user neglect(however, not saying that this happened in this case).

im sure what ever transpired with gen and this guy was a one off dealing/misunderstanding. there are two sides to every story and hopefully both parties can come to a happy agreement....doesnt look that way since its gone to small claims.

take it for what its worth....with the work ive seen from gen and my dealings with him, id definitely go back.

:eek1: Holy smokes, look who's back :D

I second what ROAB just said, and I'd like to add that we're very blessed to have two very fine acrylic tank building companies in town, Kritter Products and the mighty 33 year old Tru Vu :D

gresham...yes back from the dead. i am so anti sps right now..for that matter anti-reef and need to get back into the game one of these days.lol
my fish are pretty happy though...all 6 tangs(4zebras) and then some.

I have 2 TruVu tanks that developed stretch marks after about 3 years and there was no warranty honored on them, but this was about 15 years ago. So far, I had 2 tanks built by Krittertanks, definitely recommend Gen without any hesitation. Finish work is excellent.

psionic, I think what happened was 2x210g didn't show up. so the trial didn't happen.

as far as I can tell, it was a very involved situation, and I don't think any of us can use this one person's claim as anything valuable in reviewing Gen and his kritter creations business!

BTW I've been working with gen on a new tank, and he's been super helpful even though he definately is busy.
