Well actualy, a year would be pushing. What do you plan on doing with the shark once it outgrows your tank?

Is this a sarcsatic comment?
I've talked with a lot of people about keeping sharks. I've also wanted to setup shark tanks and have talked with what I call the experts about certain things. I've thought of maybe holding a shark in my 125g for a little bit, but the fact is that they grow very rapidly. A marbled catshark would outgrow my 125g in 8 months about. The growth rate doesn't change with sharks or rays. All bethnic sharks grow about the same. Rays grow a lot slower as I stated before, so they are a better option.

To answer a question that was asked about what I will do with the shark once it has out grown the tank. I will then take the shark to the Tennessee Aquarium where they have an exhibit for these specimens. The tank that these guys are kept in is several thousand gallons. I can not think of a better thing to do with such a beautiful creature. If I were a captive fish and had a choice I would definitely want to go to such a place. Any opinions?

Aquariums get "donations" all the time. Some take them, many do not or can not. I just wanted to mention that there is a good chance this may not be a viable option.

Bamboo sharks grow quickly for the first year of their life, and then slow down considerably after that (assuming that the shark is appropriately fed, i.e. not overfed). You can expect the shark to be in the 12"-16" range after the first year, and then grow about 2"-4" per year after that. A 180 with minimal aquascaping should be a comfortable home for the bamboo for 3-4 years, but needs to be established before placing the shark in. This means cycled and stabalized, not just moving an established filter to a new tank. After that, he will need a larger home (longer and wider), and public aquariums rarely take in sharks (there are way too many people trying to rehome sharks that have outgrown their tanks), so plan accordingly.

A sharks growth does not stunt in captivity. Keep in mind that they can easily live 25 years and grow for most of their life. This is all assuming that the egg hatches okay and that the shark begins to feed. Do some research, as lots of advise has been given on getting newly hatched sharks to feed.

As for the tangs, they are one of the safest tankmates for bamboo sharks. Good luck.

On the tang issue, there has been a thread on saltwaterfish.com about a blue hippo tang beating up a bamboo shark. It's pretty rare for tangs to pick on sharks, but not out of the question. Brenden off of SRC had a tusk pick on his shark. Not too many fish are 100% safe, just make sure you get them after the shark and add them slowly.

Thats interesting. I've kept a lot of different tangs (yellow, blue, naso, purple) with quite a few different sharks (brownbanded bamboo, whitespotted bamboo, epaulette, horn) without problems. I guess it goes to show you nothing is a sure thing in this hobby.

Yes that is so true. I've also had a lot of territorial issues with the tangs I have kept, so that may be why Yerboy had his banded shark picked on.

Yes. Me too. I dont have problems keeping my brownbanded bamboo sharks and catsharks with my naso tang, emperor angelfish and unicorn tang. I added a emperor and unicorn tang around 8inches in my 300. They never picked at my sharks.

I never had problems w/ my hippo and my banded either. Heres a vid, with some basic aquascaping that worked well for the lil guys as well.
