Bandit angel in reef?

Has anyone host a bandit angel in a reef environment?
If so, please provide details: size of fish, your tank temperature, diet, and habit.

Does it pick on corals or clams?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I would not attempt a bandit due to the cooler temps they are used to. Mine is in 74-76 degrees and from research on them they do not do well at reef temps

Do your other fish mind the lower temps? BTW, what do you keep your salinity at? I am assuming you are running a FOWLR?

I've seen them kept in reefs before, I believe on Invincibles blog, but I agree with Chris about them having to be "low reef" temps.

I don't consider 74-76 that much cooler than 78-80. I keep my SPS tank with a Bandit at that temp. and the corals do fine.
Sedar at Phishybusiness kept a pair of larger Bandits in a mixed reef so you way want to check with him and see how his did.

all I know is that my crosshatch had a very difficult time in 80-82 degree temps. I truly believe that is the main reason he did not last in my tank after six months.

I too have seen bandits in reefs before but the tank was very specific on temp and did not vary by more than 1 degree due to the chillers.

If you are going to attempt the bandit make sure you have the ability to get the tank down to lower temps without harming the inhabitants

I've kept/keep bandits with sps and clams with no issues... but I too use chillers and run 76-77...

Keeping zoos with any genus other than Centropyge and Genicanthus is asking for that anyway!

John how's your tiny bandit doing?

John - do you have any pictures of your bandit in the reef? I would love to see the contrast of the grey/white/black fish against the colorful reef.

The baby bandit is doing fine, will eat whole mysis now, had to cut them up at first. Also eats little bits of flake food. Try to feed the fish every 30 to 60 minutes when I remember. I think this will be the key to surviving, feed all day long.

Sorry Campbell... this is the best I have after a quick search... I recently got a Nikon D80 and will soon have better... I used the flash so you could barely see the reef in the background... this was with my point and shoot...

Or is that just the light emanating from the conspic?:eek1:

I'll have much better stuff soon as I figure my SLR out... my joculator trio and colini pair were spawning, and my regal trio was "dancing"... but no closing the deal that I saw!:D

triggerfish1976 and copps, how long have you both had your bandits?

Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge and experience.

The first one before this I had for 17 months, but that one had one eye that had "popeye" that I treated with many things to no avail, and he eventually withered away as a result from losing site in that eye... it was a struggle watching him try and feed and not be able to get enough to sustain himself... this current specimen I've had for over a year now... I've dived with them in the wild many times... the best place being the island of Niihau... isolated and northwest, they're found shallower there... although I did see them in relatively shallow water off of the coast of Molokai... On Oahu there are few spots were they could be seen at recreational diving depths... but the collectors know them! :)

John that display looks like absolute crap. Get it together man!!!!!! Awww inspiring to say the least. Do you still have the conspic? Regards, Tim
