Basic DSB questions part II

Will a DSB in a stand alone(not incorporated in my sump)refuge have any benefit? I doubt any detritus or much other "wast" will make it UP to my refuge.
 
Sounds like you're talking about a Remote Deep Sand Bed (RSDB). I have no experience in them but I know there are seveal threads on the subject.
 
it can work very well. but you have to learn about it and how it works and how you control it. otherwise it could be a problem. that information is too much for me to explain to you. i suggest you read a lot of the great past threads on this forum that discussed it extensively, with a lot of experts chiming in.
 
If you want a true DSB, it needs to be in the main tank since that's where the food and waste that support the life are. They don't work very well in sumps or fuges. RDSBs are essentially bacterial denitrators, so they work anywhere you have nitrate. They aren't as much for processing detritus though.
