Batwing Crocea

I have one of my crocea on the sand bed, so it gets the least amount of light. It is also the one (crocea) that opens the most. it opens to the point that it looks like a bat and is going to fly away. (vampire clam) Is this because it is speading out to get more light? its the best I can guess!

it really depend on what are your lighting spec's? from what your saying i would think your clam is fine, thats just my opinion though. can you please give us information on your lighting setup so that way we can answer your question easier:)

250w 20k over that clam +250 10k 5hrs around noon. I know the clam is fine it looks great , I was just wondering and I had heard that the large mantel (batwings) was the clams way of reaching for lights. This is what I believe , but wanted other opinions.

4-250 watt mh, 13k hamilton one end, 15k cv on other, center has 20k xm and 10k aqualine- aqualine on for noon time period @5hr.

It is hard to diagnose without a picture but it sounds "normal" to me. The croceas will open their mantles the furthest of all the clams. My largest crocea (about 4.5") extends its mantle at least 2" away from the shell.

Travis, that is what this one is is doing - 4" clam, mantle 2-1/2" away from shell, other four are only @ 1". I guess I should have just asked - How far do your mantels extend ? - but I was trying to to joke around a little to make it interesting!

Don't know why it took this long for me to think about it- but I (15 min. ago) moved 3 other crocea to same area- they too are now opening more than before! I also noticed 3-4 days ago, a sailfin blenny " nipping at these clams on the rockwork!

It seems that most people looking at this tread, were looking to help me with a problem that was not there! I really do appreciate any help you guys meant to offer!!!! This clam is looking great and just seems to be a little "different" than the my others! I was really trying to lighten up the crowd! --- (Batwing)-----and find out, if any of you have a clam that - overextends its mantel? Thanks, Charlie
