Hello Wiskey! Been reading your posts for along time! NICE tank man! And I know your no flimsy reefer...you know alot....
Please explain more about..."phospate and complication"....I'm all ears man....
Doc
The short story:
Phosphate part:
A great amount of detritus and phosphate is held up in a DSB, this is held up in animals, bacteria, bacterial flock, etc,.... As bacteria cycle, they release Phosphate and take it back up, but some of it is released back into the water, then eventually re-absorbed back into a sandbed. This is where Phosphate absorbers come in to arrest some of that and reduce algae while adding iron to the system, Macro algae refugiams also do their part, but I don't see how Algae can take down nutrients to a point where algae can't use it.
Segway into Complication:
Large RDP refugiams, Phosban media, critter recharge kits, banks of additives, huge alk demand due to all the bacterial life necessary to lock up all that phosphate, for the same reason huge 02 demand.
About the "more flow in BB"
There are people around here pushing 140X turnover plus a wave box, I doubt you could do that in a DSB tank, I know I had a ruff time with 50X flow and sand.
Ill stick with my huge skimmer and massive flow, it is easer to understand and control.
Hope this answers some of your questions,
Whiskey
