bean vs herbie overflow

I'm going to be drilling my new tank and would like to drill the least amount of holes as possible.

I see herbie has originally came up with the idea of implementing a gate valve/ball valve to control the flow from the drain to make it a full siphon.

Would I be fine with using just 2 holes rather than 3. The gph will be roughly around 900gph, but I can tune it down if need be. I found this on brs and was thinking something like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pv3u0Sa1tk&feature=player_embedded

I also don't want the internal overflow box to be as long as the tank. I'd like to make it as least noticeable as I can. I was thinking a box around 12-15"x3"x3".

Please lmk what you think and if you'd suggest me do something different. This is my first attempt at incorporating this type of overflow and anyone with experience with one willing to share their input would be a big help. :)

I have a 90 with an overflow box the full height(29"). I looked into it the other day and it is teeming with pods and baby snails. I'm going to throw some rocks with Xenia in there for them to hang out with. It is like having a second refugeum in the tank.

The Bulk Reef Supply video first demonstration is the same set up I have for my drain. Full siphon is much more quiet compare to other design that I have experience.

I have (2) 1 1/2 inch drains on my 120 gal tank. One has the gate valve, the other is fully open. It is dead silent. The one with the gate valve is turned down to where it is a full siphon. The second drain just has a trickle going through it. The only problem I see is if the second drain gets clogged, the water will have no where to go and the tank will overflow. That's where a third "Emergency drain" is nice to have. But I only have room for the 2 drain lines. The chance of the second drain getting clogged is just about impossible.

How far below the water line is the gate valve drain?

I have the drain with the gate valve about an inch below the water level in the overflow. The other drain is about a quarter inch below the overflow teeth, that way the water only drops a quarter inch. Very quiet.

I only use 2 drains and it's a Herbie method. Dead quiet. I have an upside down durso for the emergency drain, which lowers the possibility of it getting clogged. I also have an acrylic sheet over it to keep fish/snails/shrimp out of the overflow. It works flawlessly. I have put rock in my overflow as well for pods. Here's some pics for reference: BTW, I have since taken off the cap from the second drain so i have twop openings to serve as back up.

I was actually going to go with the second design on the video where you drill the back and not the bottom. Reason being I'd like more swimming room/aquascaping rather than those towers which take up space. I heard the 2nd design work just like the first. What noise have you experienced with the second, were you using a gate valve? Using a gate valve helps get the siphon perfect, a ball valve work it's just a little harder to dial in.

Very nice setup. Looks good. I take it you have one of the drains with a full siphon and the other one is not in use, just simply a back up in case something happen. I also like how you have a lid to protect from snails/fish entering. Some people don't have this and surely the odds of having a snail enter the overflow box are exponentially greater. Blocking it off looks like you'd never have a problem unless algae got in there which would be impossible because I only feed pellets/flakes..
