Bellus Angel broken fin?

I have a Bellus Angel and noticed just now that he is not using his left fin nearly as often as his right. He's also very jumpy (like he's jumping from spot to spot). Is his left fin broken? Will it get better? Should I add some Kaniplex in the tank? I am fairly certain that earlier today his fin was fine (of course now that he isn't using it, I am second guessing myself as to whether or not he was in all actuality using it). When I say not using his left fin nearly as often, I mean rarely ever but sometimes he will a little. I haven't seen any of the other fish pick on him at all. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Xaiv,

When did you get this Bellus Angel? Was he swimming like that when you got him?

Sounds like it wasn't decompressed properly. Usually not a good sign and nothing you can do about it now.

Good luck.

I just got him yesterday. I'm almost positive he was swimming fine, but now I'm starting to second guess myself. Is there no way this will heal up on it's own or there's nothing at all I can do with meds? I don't want to sit here and watch him die if that's what is going to happen to him. I got him from a very very reputable company and don't think he was decompressed improperly, but I don't really know. Is this the general consensus?

He does use his fin when trying to swim quickly away from the other fish. I'm hoping it will heal up and be just like new. Does anyone know how long it would take or if it will heal at all?

Did you buy from the diver directly. It's with the diver that catches the fish where the decompression occurs.

If the fish is swimming all herky jerky than there is really nothing that can be done. It may live for a while but it is not a good scenario for the long run.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. When ever you buy Bellus Angels you have to watch that they are swimming properly and not all out of wack because that is a sure sign of improper decompression.

Sorry.

Well, I think he might have just gotten scared when I first put him in the tank and ran into a rock or something. He's been quarantined for over a month so I know he's made it in captivity for at least that long. Today I fed him and he couldn't get enough food, so I was happy to see that he wanted to eat as usually that is a good sign. I noticed he was using his fin a little more today. How long would you consider "a while" for? Thanks!

Would he still eat like a pig if he was improperly decompressed? I was under the impression that if they were not decompressed properly, their stomach would pop.

I also noticed that the bottom fin on the right side is much shorter than the left. It looks like maybe he was picked on in his previous tank which may be why his left fin is messed up. Would either melafix or Kanaplex help speed up the healing process? Does anyone recommend it?

It is good to hear that he/she is eating well again There could be a number of reasons why the fin is damaged but I doubt it is broken and from your description I doubt it is decompression problems (though that is common amongst Genicanthus).
As for the jumping around, well, Genicanthus can move in an unusual manner. They almost look like they are flicking at times but this is just natural movement.
After a month in QT his fin, if it was picked on, should have healed which leads me to think it maybe a bacterial infection.
imo you should leave him in the DT for now and make sure you are feeding good quality, nutritious food. If things don't continue to improve then another coarse of action maybe needed but not yet. Please keep us posted.

Thank you so much for the info! I will definitely keep everyone posted. I'm already attached to the little guy, so I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he lives. Last night I soaked his food in garlic guard and vitamin supplement. I'll keep doing that. He seems to like the pe meisis best, so I will focus mostly on feeding him that.

I would try and get it on a regular feed. Start mixing the mysis in what you plan to feed - flake, pellets, frozen etc. and keep him/her well fed

Oh also, I forgot to say that he has been and is still breathing very normally. He's still very active, so I'll keep this updated!

I wanted to give an update on this guy. He's still doing great. He's eating a ton and swims all over the tank all day long. I treated him with some melafix. I've noticed that he's started using his fin a lot more than he was, but still isn't quite 100%. I'm hoping it will be soon!
