Benefit of External over Internal Return Pumps

I am looking for a high head return pump to make the 14' trip from my basement sump back to my 120. If i was going to do a submersable pump i would do a Mag18, it is half the cost and right around the flow i want. If i was going to do external i would get a Panworld PS150 or Reeflow Tarpoon, both are at least 100 more then the Mag18, and both would need to be throttled back.

I know that submersible pumps tend to heat the water more, but for me that is not a problem and if anything a benefit since my basement stays relatively chilly year round.

I know that some external pumps can be wired for 220, but can the same be done with a magdrive? The mag pump puts out 145 watts, and both externals around 180 without being throttled back or converted to 220.

So what are the benefits?

I have the same scenario, I have Iowaki running for 4 years nonstop without problems.
I think the heating from the Mag would be significant

Well the benefit to external is IF your temps tend to run high, the external is good because it transfers less heat to the water. However, if your temps are never high and you even have a heater thats on once in a while, then an internal pump might actually help you save a little electricity. If your basement stays chilly, this might not be a bad idea...

Now looks like a good time to advertise my Lifeguard Sea Horse 3/4 horsepower pump I've got for sale, you can look it up on ebay or drsfostersmith, $150 ships it. PM me if anyone's interested.
