Best concert lens?

well, not knowing where you sit, what type of camera you are using. But I would suggest something with some range and speed. So for canon, i would like the 70-200 2.8

50mm f/1.2
85mm f/1.2

I don't own either of those but you said the best! The 50mm f/1.4 works just fine as does the 85mm f/1.8. The 24-70 f/2.8 works as does the 70-200 f/2.8 mentioned above.

You will feel the need for speed in an indoor concert. If its outdoor during the daytime...well...a kit lens will do alright lol

I'm not sure yet if it's indoor or outdoor. Just figuring for indoor and low lit pictures. The 50mm 1.4 is a good price.

My worry with the 50mm is that it doesn't have much reach. If you can't get to within 15 ft. of the performers, it might be a bit distant. For low light, the 85mm 1.8 would work nicely. It supposedly has faster AF than the much more expensive 85L.

If you are in the first 10 rows then the 50mm would be ok, but otherwise you won't see much.

Plus a lot of concerts don't let you bring SLRs in. So check that out before bringing it and they make you walk all the way back to your park to put it away.

the question now is how to cheat your way into a concert with a 70-200mm or 400mm F/2.8 equiped DSLR

You definitely want the lowest f stop you can afford...It's tough to get a fast enough shutter speed in low light to freeze action even at f/2.8. Here's a few I shot on Friday...the first 2 are of the bands at f/2.8 with faster shutter speeds to try and get some clarity, but there just isn't a lot of exposure to get real detail. The last one is of the stage with no bands, still at f/2.8, but with a 1.3s shutter speed, so the detail and color is much better. (none of these are GREAT shots, as my skills are lacking :))

Oh, BTW...Shot with a Canon Rebel XSi and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro.

edit: Last shot was with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6...shot at 40mm f/5.0 1.3s
