best dwarf angel

What is the best dwarf angel in a reef tank? My tank is going to have mostly softies and LPS. I'm not too concerned if they snack on xenia or GSP lol. I was originally going to get the flame dwarf but now I'm hearing horror stories about them. opinions?

Golden Angels are cryptic and don't seem to pick on corals as much as some other Dwarfs.

I have had nightmares with Flame Angels and Coral Beauties.

he's not really for a newbie though. says difficult to care for so unfortunately I won't get getting this one.

any others? is the cherub angel ok?

I think the pygmy cherub angel (argi) and pacific white-tail pygmy are among the safest dwarf angels. There was a thread on here if you search that had an Excel document listing the percentage of safe/ non-safe angelfish.

I had a pair Centropyge aurantius, Golden angels, that loves to nip on my Acans.

If you don't mind the price, I say save up for a Centropyge joculator or a pair. They are a little bigger then most Centropyge, fairly reef safe, easy to keep and not too aggressive.

It's going to be down to personality but the flameback and smaller dwarfs are reputed to be well behaved. I personally have a coral beauty and have never seen any nipping at all.

C.argi and its relatives ( Both the Flamebacks Brazilian & African, Resplendent Angel) are less likely to nip. Also Fisher's & Whit-tail Angel.
A little more risky, but you have a large tank, are Coral Beauties & Flames, and Potter's.

I had no problems with my flame angel.

It seems like the biggest issue I have personally heard of with angels is with acans.

thanks for the tips everyone! I'll keep these in mind. I don't really want to spend over $100 for a fish since I'm a newbie. Also some of these are listed as difficult to take care of. I might look into lamark's and the swallowtail since they're pretty nice looking. I won't discount the cherub angel either, I really like the blue color. Of course I will only be adding one. will the yellow tang be an issue with any of these?

I have a trio of c. argi doing very well, no nips. I had to remove a female lamarck because she was trying to eat a wellso brain.

This is just my opinion, but before you put an angel in there you need to decide what the priority is - the angel or the coral. Angels are hard to catch. There are some corals that angels are more attracted to that are going to be more at risk. When someone says his fish didn't nip the reason can be fish personality or it can be the type of corals kept. Or a combination. Also some will nip at clams, so you would want to keep that in mind if you want clams.

If the coral is your first love and you must have fleshy ones like open brains, I'd get something other than a Centropyge.

What a Centropyge does all day long is peck at the rock - the presence of well established microalgae laden rock is going to have an effect on whether the fish goes for your coral in my opinion. It's also needed to keep the fish "happy".

I still see no nipping with my Bicolor, but I'm not foolish enough to add Scoly's, Acans, or especially, Trachyphyllia to the tank!
Lots of Algae, please note.

just make sure they have alot to forage on, algae and micro organisms and keep them well fed and they should nt bother at least my flame hasnt messed with my coral but i dont have acans, or scoly's

So far,

So far,

I've had my coral beauty for 2,1/2 months,so far he very well behaved. Looks as though he picks off, what ever the hermit crabs are probably eating off the corals.
I watched him closely the first week, but all the corals are fine. They grow well, and don't have any parasites.
I have a couple of different types,. No acans or anything real difficult, a couple of zoas, a few green stars, all frags,
But I hear coral beauties are about 50/50.I'm only 6 months into this, and he dose well.
