Hi Everyone,

I am looking at setting up a 20-30g tank soon and I was looking at skimmers. I do not have much room available so it will have to be a HoT. I have seen alot of different brands out there but I wanted to know what you use.

go skimmerless. its best to go skimmerles on nanos. heres a good link to read. the 6th paragragh gets into why skimmers are bad on a nano. i notice alot of new people to nano's use skimmers because they read how they are used in larger systems but when it comes to a nano its totally different. so i wouldnt take advice when it comes to nano's unless its from an article since there written by someone who really has experience rather then someone who just gives there advice whitch might not be that good. good luck :)

I like the remora. they now make one for nano tanks. some people say they skim poorly but i have found that they need to have a clean pump to work good. i clean my pump every 2 weeks. let it go longer then that and performance suffers. The over skimming debate has been going on a long long time. Buy a skimmer r don't Just experiment with what works for you. That's what makes it a hobby and gives something to do other than look a the tank!

Deltec or Remora from what I had read while I was looking. I bought the remora due to price difference and I am happy with it.

 I have used a skimmer and I have also ran my tank without. I see no difference either way. I believe if you keep your tank's water changed each week, you can keep the tank at a certain level. If you want a more indepth approach then you may want a protein skimmer.

Depends upon what type of tank that you want.

More heavilly stocked tanks (and fed), no matter what the size, will have more protein to remove...thus a protein skimmer is usually necessary at some point. But, people who go w/out skimmers usually just need to keep up on much more frequent H2O changes. There is not one right answer on the protein skimmer debate, IMO, as there alot of ways to maintain and take care of your tank.
Personally, I had the Remora Pro HOT skimmer with the larger pump on a provious 75g lightly stocked FishOnly-LiveRock tank and it did well. I still have it, and am planning on using it on a Oceanic 30g cube reef tank soon.

Good luck -

Deltec MCE300!!!!! Just to be different! :p

+1 Definetly an awesome skimmer. Ive owned the Remora and the superskimmer and the deltec out performs them by far. If you can afford the deltec go for it.

Some thing in the tank will produce proteins. The proteins need to be removed and a skimmer will do this well.

I have the nano remora with 900 maxi-jet. I might replace the pump with a 1200 maxi-jet.

I might be getting a different skimmer if you're planning on the Remora. I might put it on ebay. I have the Remora Pro. I was doing all HOTB eqp., but then changed my mind and I'm going with an in sump skimmer. Just thought I'd let you know, or give anyone a heads up.
