Hello-

I have been out of the loop for a couple of years and I'm hoping to learn about anything new that I may have missed. Any "must-have" ideas or equipment out there? Thanks.

T-5's are pretty big. you probably saw them 3 years back, but their power is now proven. Crazy expensive needle wheel skimmers are hot....for some people anyways. Foam rock reefs are comin in, its actually pretty cool. I cant really think of anything else, someone else will chime in.

Remote deep sand beds and refugiums, not sure how recent that is.

some fads
carbon dosing
mag dosing
iodine dosing
(i don't do any of these)

GFO reactors have proven themselves as a viable means of phosphate export. Conversely, data has shown that nutrient export via growing macro algae in a refugium is usually in to small of quanities to have an impact. A refugium would need to be about twice the size of the display.

Protein skimmers have increased in efficiency and effectiveness. Particularly the needlewheel, threadwheel and meshwheel designs that use less energy.

High water flow in reef aquaria has grown in importance and made easier to obtain by dispersed stream type powerheads such as Koralias, vortech and tunze that move large volumes of water with low power consumption. For the most part, these have replaced the popularity of closed loop designs.

It's all about the reflectors... advancements in T5 individual parabolic reflectors and MH reflectors such as lumenarc IIIs have shown that superior reflectors have the ability to increase useable light multiple times over.

Controling algae blooms is all about nutrient export. Forget about the days of finding that special fish to try to combat your hair algae outbreak, what a losing battle... Also can effectively control certain low nutrient algae such as bubble algae with high magnesium levels

Aquaculture is IN... more fish can be viably breed in captivity, aquacultured corals are hardier and more colorful and attention is paid to the issue with declining reefs worldwide.

Tunze streams are no longer the only option for stream style flow... Tunze came out with a nanostream, and other companies have come out with stream style pumps such as the Seio and the Koralia, and you can now purchase "retrofit" modification kits to turn a maxijet into a high flow stream style pump.

Phosphate removal media (ferric oxide): phosban, rowaphos, and others, run in a reverse flow media reactor.

Some skimmers have become so effective that it is now possible to overfilter a tank and run into LOW nutrient issues.

T5 lighting is arguably as strong as MH, and many people are using it. There are also LED fixtures available which are reported to work well, but they are very expensive.

Designer SPS frags have hit the scene in a big way as of late. Tiny but high quality pieces with exceptional coloration tend to be available from a few online vendors.

Sulfur denitrifiers are pretty new -- to the hobby at least.

Except for the one I used back in 1990 ;)

I think the voretch is a pretty cool design.

I forgot one. Add that to the list of new stream style pumps above.

^^^ Me too. I was going to look it up and see what I could find. Delkin, if you have any good threads on that, could you please post them?
