Best plants for sump

To answer that, you should specify more about your goals for the sump.

If it is nutrient export with minimum care, Chaeto is dependable. I don't like it because nothing eats it and I have seen a tendacy for it to break off and leave parts in display tank.

In general, I recommend Ulva because it is fast growing and everything eats it including people as it is a main ingredient in Nori. The point being, you can exports nutrients or recycle them by feeding Tangs fresh greens.

I am at this same point and looking to do the same as the OP.

Does Ulva spread to the display or go asexual like some others? I know chaeto does not but as you mention nothing really eats it either

In extreme cases, Chaetomorphy will go sexual. In that extreme, a drop of water with algae spores can become a underwater forest.

Ulva is a good choice. I only have one display with a refugium. It is what I use. I have used it in display tanks. Contrasted with Dragons Breath, I found it attractive.
