what is the best and safest way to rid mytank of them. last time my wife tried to kalk them she fried a plate. we have them even getting into my colonies. HELP.

Was she blowing the kalk over the aptasia? That's the only way I could see someone frying a nearby plate. Get an insulin syringe and inject them. Peppermints seem to be hit or miss, but they worked like a charm for me.

Get a copperband butterfly, It will take care of it in a couple of days. The only problem is they are very picky eaters when it comes to frozen food.

I've tried the following...

home-made kalk paste - works well but you have to reapply it sometimes and it can hurt your other coral. Make sure all pumps are off when you are dosing it.

Joe's Juice - works similar to kalk paste. Save some money and make your own solution with water and pickling lime.

Peppermint shrimp - the one I have doesn't seem to eat them. I believe it depends on which of the two peppermint species you have.

Berghia Nudibranchs - I believe my shrimp, crabs and mandarins ate them before they could do their job.

I've been killing aptasia for over 6 months now. The key is to kill them when you see only one or two so you can stop them from spreading.

This was my tank late last year. Now there is only 1 small aptasia in view on those rocks.

use kalk paste (correctly) and it should work just fine

ditto, just get a nice thick paste, and pile it on em'...........

Get a couple peppermints and kalk paste the big ones. This will kill the big ones and the peppermint shrimp only eat the small ones so they will clean up the pieces.

a pair of peppermints cleared my whole tank, even the big ones

I wish I was that lucky. Where did you buy your peppermint shrimp? The one I bought from Iowa Petfood did nothing.

Sea of Marvels, got the pair for $18 IIRC.

I still have only seen them in the tank twice over the last 3 months. once when the female was holding onto a bunch of eggs, and another when i cought them eating some mysis feed to the tank. They stay behind the rock wall pretty much all day.I have thought they were dead a few times, but i never see any new aspiasa pop up. and when i do, they are gone the next day.

are you sure you got a peppermint and not a camel.

Kalk water injected into the large ones with some small needle and syringe finished the big aptasia while Sea of Marvels purchased true peppermint shrimp (lysmata wurdani, almost clear with stripes NOT camels with whaite and red humpbacks) kept them from coming back and finished off the small ones.

I have a bunch in my overflow box which is a very effective scrubbing system for excess food.
