best way to rinse sand?

I've heard of people pocking small holes in the bag the sand comes with, then rinsing the sand in the bag, letting the water drain at the bottom. Never tried it, but seems like it would work

i put some in a 5 gallon bucket. maybe 3 inches deep. stick the hose in the bucket and let er rip. use your hand and pick up the sand off the bottom of the bucket and move it around a lot. this will take all the small particles and dust and other crap thats in there, and float it out. keep it up till the water runs out clear. i did this in my back yard btw.

+1 on that. That is how I always clean my sand.

if it's dry sand I put it in a bucket, take it outside and stick the hose in it with a gentle stream and let all the dust overflow. Once the water is clear after jamming the hose down to the bottom a few times, I drain the excess water and put it in the tank (for a new setup). On an established setup I'd probably let it dry for a couple days.

do you think rinsing sand in non RO water is harmful?

You don't have to use RO water to rinse sand.
