Best way to use carbon?

I have a 220gal tank with a 75gal sump. So far I haven't been running carbon like I did on my last tank, but lately I was thinking about it since I now am back up to a fairly descent bio-load.
I probably won't run it 24/7 like I did on my last tank, but what would you guys recommend?

I have two 1" returns into my sump that I currently use 100micron filter socks on.

I tried putting some carbon in one of the filter socks once, but in less than a day the water was overflowing over the top of the sock.

I end up having to replace the filter socks once a week because of the crud they filter--so I don't know if that is the best place for carbon or not?

Is there some kind of mesh bag or something that I could fill with carbon and just drop in the sump?

Should their be a minimal amount of flow over the carbon?

Should I just not mess with carbon altogether?

Help please!!!

I run a line off my overflow into a container holding the carbon, and change it out every month and a half.

I'm looking at a Kent Phos reactor--any thoughts on these?

Also would I be better off just running regular carbon in one or using the Kent Power Phos?

I'm not too sure about all the different medias and which are best for overall system health.
