big splash in my sump

I have a 2-drilled holes overflow on my 75 gal tank with a Mag 9 for return. The overflows to my sump is making this big splash........sounds like exploding bomb. Water is splashing all over my tank. It does it every 5 - 10 seconds. It's like bubbles are trapped or something.

Anyone had experience this before? Please let me know how to fix this?

as always any comments is appreciated.
Thanks

i have the same type of problem to.
but i put a fine filter pad kind of over my mine to quite it down.
it does help for me.......

The splash is in the overflow box, right? It kind of sounds like you have a siphon problem. You'll want to research different standpipes to create a more laminar flow from the display to the sump, and you may want to back off the flow from the mag 9 a little.

Yes, the problem appears to be in the overflow tube (clear tube).

Ok, let me reduce the flow from the return pump and see if it helps.

Thanks,

Also watch your plumbing for any areas where it goes 'up' to form where air can collect and break the flow. I have a 9.5 I am able to run full open now once I eliminated bubble traps.

Gimmic,

That's exactly what i'm seeing. The bubbles seem to trap in the tube and caused a splash.

How do you eliminate the bubble traps?

Thanks,

I don't have the internal overflow. I have the drilled holes on top of my tank.

How would you build one for the drilled holes overflow.

What is your water level going INTO/through the drilled hole? Could you put a breather on the top of the elbow going down? You might put a T where you have an elbow currently, cap it, and put a hole in the top of the cap.

You basically want to allow air to enter so it doesnt only get air from the intake. Also, how is your piping below? you could also have the pipe exit above the water line, splashing onto rocks.

I had the same problem in my overflow/sump. I have ball valves on my drains, so I dialed them back slightly and let the drain pipes fill up. Then I slowly opened the drains again to try and keep an equilibrium lessen the vertical drop/splash. I also installed a couple gurglebusters in my overflow. Now, it is much quieter.
