I second the tongs. Just ensure they are not too long or you will have trouble clearing the lights in the canopy, if you have a center brace in the tank. If the canopy is taller it isn't much of an issue.
My cover is 15" high and it is a pain to get to the bottom with the tongs sometimes. I normally end up sticking my hands in there LOL.
But seriously, sometimes tongs just won't do. You just have to roll up your sleeve and stick your arm in there. You can't aquascape with tongs, you can't feel if the rocks are stable with tongs.
