bio-balls or no bio-balls

Bio balls are great, they do what they are suppose to. they do a great job as long as you maintain them... don't just put them in and forget about them, they need to be rinsed to do their job correctly. But for most of us we don't like having to maintain them, so your going to get a lot of "no bio balls", my vote would be rock rubble.

bio-balls in what? bio-cube? sump? if you go with bio balls keep them free of detritus, same goes for rock rubble =) welcome to RC

Bioballs only has the ability to convert nitrates to nitrate, not any further in the nitrogen cycle. What most peopme seem to lack and can't get enough of is bacteria that convert nitrate to nitrogen. Bioballs don' t do that. Live rock do, as well as matrix. So what is the point of bioballs? It only takes up space, and I read an article here that someone ment it also competed with the liverock that takes the nitrogen cycle all the way to nitrogen, meaning a total of more nitrates in your tank...

No anaerobic bacteria for nitrate reduction.
