Anyone have experince with Aqua Craft Bio-Sea Marine Mix salt?
Good, bad or ugly?
Did a search here and didn't see much.

Awhile back, maybe 10 years ago Ron Shimek posted on Reef Central, some research he had been doing on how most major brands of commercially prepared salt mixes added heavy metals to our reef tanks and that these levels continued to build up causing harm to our corals.
He also sampled a variety of salt mixes to see what levels of heavy metals were in them. Bio-sea marine mix was the only salt he tested that did not have any levels of heavy metal in it.
Being relatively new to reefing at the time, I ordered some right away and when it came, immediately did a fifty percent water change with this new salt. Within a week most of my corals were dead!! This was most likely because of the size of the water change I did and not the salt, but it was enough to scare me off it for good. I also remember seeing posts from others at the time, experiencing corals dying off after doing a water change with this salt.
Anyway, just mix up a batch and test it for alk, calcium and magnesium. If the numbers are in the ballpark try a 10 percent water change and see how things go.
Good Luck!

I know a few years back there was a salt called crystal sea that people had major issues with.
When I did a google search on bio-sea, the crystal sea salt turned up in the links.

I am curious to know too.

I find a lot of mixed reviews about the Bio-Sea Marinemix.

I am planning on picking up a large (wholesale) batch of the stuff next week and I am a bit anxious now.

Nonetheless, with the paucity of recent information out there, I plan to pick it up and do my own testing.

my initial results were promising. I did a settlement test on a fresh batch of Bio Sea and Reef Crystals. There was significant deposition in the Reef Crystals container and essentially none in the Bio Sea.

During some of my initial batches, I found that Alk and Ca were spot on, however, a recent test showed a departure from that.

Testing still needs to be done, but I can tell you that I've been using it on all my systems and the results seem just fine so far.
