Is it ok to use a bio wheel for a reef set - up? I have an emporer
400. from what I understand , the live rock handles the bio load.
is this correct?
thanks......

the live rock and live sand handle the filtration. are you running a sump/refugium? If not might make the emp400 a small refugium. From what i ve seen others on here say you do not want or need the bio wheels at all.

The Bio wheel can be used or not used. keep a close eyeon your Nitrates if you run the Bio wheel. I use an emperor 280 with the Bio wheel removed to run Carbon only.

the biowheels are fine to start with. When your nitrates start climbing and you can't get them down with water changes, it's time for a sump/refugium. Just drop the wheels in for a week or two and your nitrates will drop and your sump will be seeded.

Agree with the other responses. I too have run an Emperor 400 for the past 3 months or so. I recently had some issues with my nitrate levels and after reading another post, I decided to remove both of them. Have been without them now for about 2 weeks. My nitrate levels dropped a little as a result.

Never thought about running the Empreror as a refugium....will give it some thought.
