My little kids used bio-wheel filtration in their tanks for years and had great success. If you overfeed or don't do water changes you may have excess nitrates but otherwise it's a bullet-proof system used by lots of reefers. Same thing with bio-balls they just get a bad rap if you let your husbandry slide.
