I have a 29 gallon Biocube reef setup (beginning stages). I currently have:

2 paired hi fin red banded gobies w/ pistol shrimp
1 purple firefish
1 cleaner shrimp
1 peppermint shrimp
Hermit crabs
Astraea snails

I will be getting paired clownfish in a month or so. I need ideas for 1-2 more middle swimming fish. Help!

If you get a pair of clowns you will be maxed out. I have the same tank. I am stopping at 4 fish with a yellow watchman, a hybrid clown, a mccoskers, and a blue assessor. With a pair of clowns you have to be careful as the female may take over that size tank.

They are limited on movement. They only get to be about 2 1/2 inches. But yes you are correct they are not recommended. You will hear both sides on them. You can keep them healthy and happy in a small tank because I have seen it over the past year. My opinion is a lid is much more important than tank size.

But not to get off your original point of good nano fish that will swim in open water, basslets like grammas or assessor a are great. There are also some great small wrasses like cryptic or possum that fill that role. My original point is that you may want to rethink a clown pair and just do one clown and an option like these. Just take it slow and make sure your filtration can handle it.
