birds nest. Something eating it?

all of a sudden my birds nest started turning white. It is moving from the bottom of it to the top. When I examin it closely all the polyps are gone. I don't have my camera at the moment so no way to take pics.

Is something eating it? all my levels are good. calcium is at 500
It has been in my tank for about a month now and has been growing like crazy.
Thanks,
Brad

Brad, when you say your calcium is at 500 and you say your levels are good, that makes me wonder what you consider good. A level of 500 Ca is NOT good. That is well above the level that is needed. Pending what you keep your Alk at, 380-420 is plenty sufficent and anything over those values isnt going to give you any benefit. I suggest you post the rest of your parameters, ie alk, mag, ph, salinity as well as pictures. I will say that TN from the base up often means demise for the coral unless you get the cause under control in a big hurry. Good luck!

If you have any sps, the very most important thing is to keep your alkalinity stable. W/out this they will die off one by one. An Alk test kit is an absolute must have.

FYI, Alk should be around 8-13. if you got 100, then something has gone horribly wrong

I'm pretty sure his kit is just reading "ppm" instead of dKH or something.

I think 100ppm is around 2 meq/l, which is a little low, but not awful.

also why is your Ca so high. is it from the salt, assuming you are using oceanic. best to shoot for NSW levels and works around from there to what works best in your tank. i never really measure Ca anymore , just alk and tweak the reactor as needed to keep it stable and in the 8-9 range. also how is the water flow around the coral. sometimes as the coral grows it will block itself from much needed flow and start to STN from the base up why it still grows well, sort of a catch 22 situation that only good random and tubulent flow can fix.

I believe the calcium is so high from using too much Kalkwasser. ??
I am using Oceanic's Reef Crystals. I used Kents super buffer and raised the PPM to about 175. Since then the birds nest stoped dying. At least the white has not spread any more. I think the low ALK is what caused the crash.
Thanks for everyones help.

anytime your calcium gets really high, it'll drive down alk, and vice versa.

So Calcium high means low Alk. So when I do Kalkwasser should I always to Buffer too?

What about PH where does this play into everything?

It might be flatworms. If you take the frag out (assuming you can take it out), take a turkey baster and blast the coral with the turkey baster. Flatworms will be dislodged easily this way.
