Black Sand

I was at IMAC and I saw that "Sharky's Reef" used black sand in one of his displays. I kind of liked that as it was something different and really made the colors of the corals stand out. Has anyone used black sand in a deep sand bed before and can tell me some pros and cons......maybe the best brand to buy? Thanks!

Black Sand

Tiki,

If you would like to come by and see it in person just let me know. I too am in Aurora, but anyway I just took some pics for ya. It is about 4" deep and I have been running it for less than a year with no problems. I have been able to keep my chemistry levels at bay.

I have black sand as well (in Aurora as well...:hmm4: ), and love it. It helps the colors to really pop. I wouldn't buy the tahitian moon stuff as it isn't that black, mainly brown. There's two places in Naperville (75th & Naper also 95th & 59) that sell jet black sand, but, the bags are small so it could get costly.

The 75th and Naper Blvd. store is Pets Etc. and the 59 and 95th store is Petfun. Hope that helps a little. I seen this sand there and I believe the bags are only 5lbs or 10lbs. Pretty small. Black sand is awesome, especially with a black background on the tank. The only thing is that you need to use a lot of light to really make the colors "pop." I'm sure you got the light thing covered though, if this is for a reef tank.

JEEMANN99 has a black sand bed

Jesus, now why would you want to go and open Pandora's Box like that? Now we even have pictures. Before the days out, we'll have a photo album of his fish's baby pictures.
