Black Tang

I have a chance to get a black tang from a lfs. WHat do you guys think a fair price is for a healthy Black Tang? It will be a medium sized specimin.

fair price today...........after researching several sources, man, its pretty hard to say with so many being different priced........ id say a good average was around $320. What are they asking for it! it sure is a cool fish!

to tell you the truth, with so many different prices, im going to say my opinion is what is it worth to you......Pay more at a lfs for one that is healthy that you know you would be happy with, or pay less from a website where it will be a toss up of its condition.....

It is worth exactly what you are willing to pay for it. I wouldn't pay $25 for one personally except to make a quick buck.

I would think more than $200 less than $600.

I haven't seen a wholesale price in a long time but both of those prices fall within an acceptable range for what the guy probably paid for the fish. Anything under $300 and you are stealing that fish for sure though. Though if you are considering a fish that is easily over $300 then money should not be an object for you and six or seven hundred should be fine too.

Thet fact that you are concerned over the price means you probably should not buy the fish just to post pics here on RC...If you really love the fish then you'll pay whatever he asks, if you can't pay what he asks then you don't want the fish..get a scopas and just squint

C'mon - unless it's a really rare fish nobody want's to pay over the odds. There are many fish i want which I can't "pay what he asks"
You sound like you work in an LFS;)

lately black tangs have shot up in price. The last one on liveaquaria sold for 600 or so. I know their prices are higher, but black tangs have gone up. I paid 300 for mine 3yrs ago. Awesome fish.

I got a great deal at my LFS about 4" for 150.00. And all was for frag trades...

Great fish.

Happy Reefing

ricks, are you sure you didn't get yourself a really black Z scopas and not Z rostratum? I highly doubt a LFS is selling rostratum for 150.00. That means the wholesaler was selling them for 50.00-70.00. No way. If it is true, it's time to take a trip to Oregon. Do you have pics. Tim

I would say depending on size $450-600 would be a good price.

I love mine, great fish. I can't believe how many non-reef/saltwater people comment on it. I mean in the same tank there is a powder blue tang, red sea regal, scribbled angel all these I would think would catch the average joe's comments but don't get as many as the black tang.

The black Tang came from Steve at Oregon Reef, system when it was taken down. It was a great deal and a nice fish, and all for coral frags...

I agree. My big black tang gets many of my visitors reaction. They love it for being jet black. The crosshatch and dragon moray still steal the show. Tim

I was quoted $400 for a 3" Black Tang from a dealer in Hawaii with free shipping tp a Fed-Ex holding facility. Fish from the Christmas Island area come into Hawaii on Wednesday evenings prior to being sent on to Los Angeles. I am close to dropping the cash as an early Christmas gift to myself.

I hate to break the news to everyone, but the weekly christmas flight has been discontinued leaving only a once a month flight now (which is sometimes once every 5-6 weeks) christmas fish prices will eventually rise due to the lack of availability, which include black tangs (which have already rose in price dramatically in the past 2-4 years)

400+ for a smaller size is a good price. The ultra tiny ones are much harder to come by and demand a higher price, but the dinner plate sizes are often collected and are cheaper (also a pain to ship)

I have a tiny 1.5" one now that im trying to fatten up. Small tangs become skinny fast and need to eat all day!

no not robert... lol I think he was banned from RC...

I dont know the whole story, just the hear say from a few christmas islanders. But the airline (Air Pacific) originally was going to postpone the weekly flights due to the runway condition (big pot holes etc) but now i guess the Christmas Government owes AP money of some sort and they aren't going to continue the flights for now. The freighter (or once a month flight) is operated by a solo pilot who i believe will take over the weekly if there is enough interest (which there most definitely is!)

dont expect to see to many black tangs, goldflakes, emps, declives, polleni groupers, gold puffers(the real ones) anymore for now.

I think someone will continue the flights eventually though. Wait and see i guess :)
