i am taking all the silicon sand out of my tank tomorrow. aragonite is better for many reasons. slight buffering, better shaped grains, less sharp/angular.
I have a 12g nano with black sand in it. By far it is more angular and sharp, I cannot comment on any diminished buffering capacity though I will say it does have a tendancy to look really dirty when cyno algae or detritus gets on it. Oddly more then withe sand IMO.
My main display tank has black sand. I love how the colors of my zoas pop against the black sand. I do have the dirty sand issue. And I hate picking off all of the metallic particles out of my magnetic scraper when it accidently falls into the sand bed. I guess its a preference thing. I would do it again in another tank tho.
