blessing in disguise?

First off, Thanks to Andrew, Barrett, and Marty for the wonderful frags over the weekend. My fiance and I had a wonderful time meeting you guys and checking out the sponsors stores in town.

Now to my little story,
To incorporate the new frags and live rock I picked up, I spent most of Sunday morning rearranging and cleaning the tank. Once satisfied I kicked back for an afternoon of football. Soon after lunch Im sitting on the couch when I hear a loud pop/crack noise. I looked over to the tank and to my horror a crack had developed down the back corner of the tank and began leaking water down the back of the stand. After an intense scramble laced with profanities, we were able to get all livestock, rock and water out of the tank before it got any worse. Luckily we were home at the time and the carpet only ended up slighty wet. Needless to say, I was frustrated. With the livestock back in the 20 gal I left set up (dont really know why but im glad i did) and the live rock circulating in a heated cooler, I began thinking about where to go from there. The only tank I had empty was a 55 gal that I bought cheap with a stand awhile back (sorta an impulse buy, didnt really have any real use for it). Long story shorter, I ended up with a new 50 gal (2 in shorter than the 55)from petsmart to put on the stand I already had. Most of my live rock is in the new tank, my livestock and corals are in the 20, and my 36 in light is over that. SOOO....now I need to look for equipment for the 50. Im thinking a 48 in 4 x 54 watt T5 light, a used hang on back skimmer, a cheap hob filter modded into a fuge, and a couple of powerheads.

What do you think about the choice for light? The tank is only 18 in deep so I figured this would be a pretty good mixed reef light. Also, what kind and how big of powerheads should I be looking at? Im only interested in soft corals and LPS. Thanks for your help!

T-5 would defiantly be enough lighting. And wow that sucks. As far as a hob filter why not just drill the tank and make a sump with the 20 gallon. Also I think like maybe one or 2 powerheads would be fine. The corals you seem to be doing really don't need that much flow. A Korila 2 would be fine. And you have a protein skimmer now right?

I kinda wanna stay away from drilling and sumps and all due to the added flooding risk. Im saving that project for when I no longer live in an apartment. I dont have a protein skimmer right now, just a pair of large hob filters with filter floss, chemi pure, and purigen. The zoas, mushrooms, candy canes, and gsp are doing great but the two softies (kenya tree and xenia) are looking rough. I dont know if it was the added trauma from the emergency move or just my tanks conditions but I dont know if theyre going to make it. I think Ill look into a single powerhead but I thought I would want two so as to converge the flows and decrease the laminar flow (which isnt good right?).

two would be better but with the corals that you are wanting they don't need much flow to start with. The kenya tree and xenia will more than likely make it. Even if the xenia looks all melted it will come back well mine did anyways. So did you want to use an overflow box to prevent the overflowing?? Most likely you are looking for a HOB skimmer than right well since you are not doing the pump. My dad's friend is selling his. I know he was using it for his 75 and that reef octopus is a good company. I think that is a cheap deal but to be honest have no idea.

Are you talking about an overflow with a drilled tank? Besides the fact its already filled with fresh saltwater, Im reluctant drilling a tank so I would have to use a siphon overflow box. From what I understand this type of setup can easy flood during power outs and such. If I wasnt in such a hurry to get everything in the 50 (the 20 is operating on a very heavy bioload right now) I would consider more permanent modifications. Someday I would like to do my own all-in-one with a sectioned off sump/refugium area but for now Ill settle with whatever I can hang on the side and incorporate in the tank.

I saw the skimmer post and I was going to give him a call and see if we could work something out. I dont know much about skimmers but from what I read its a good unit. My only concern is getting it from Memphis to Starkville. Id have it shipped but I just went through hell getting reinbursed by UPS insurance for a refugium after it was broken in transit. ugh...bad luck all round lately!

i have a 75 with Nova Extreme Quad T5s and my corals love it..even my crocea clam! and i have a Reef Octopus bh-2000 on the back and everything is good.

i have nova extreme T5s on my 30...but its empty...for the moment!

OH Sky! That's Sux!

I know what it's like to blow a seam. If you're in this hobby long enough, it happens.

I'm glad you bought a new tank / warranty. Now, tell me about the 50. Shape? What are the dimensions? Is the bottom panel tempered? You can't drill a tempered tank; it'll shatter into leeetle, tineee peeeeces, maing!

Secondly, you don't need a drilled tank. What you might want to strive for however, is an HOB Skimmer from Reef Octopus. Nice Stuff! But you can plan on dropping $150

And it was really nice meeting you and Katie too. Congrats on your engagement.

Yeah after what happened I decided I wanted to start with a new tank. The 50 is 48 x 13 x 18 tall. Its basically a 55 minus 2 inchs of height. Doesnt sound like much but I like it so much better than the 55. I also went all in with the sand bed. I bought two more 30 lb bags so now I have over 90 lbs of aragonite for a sandbed thats between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 inches deep. I really like the look and the filtering/producing-microfauna benefits of it. Also coupled with the shorter height of the tank, I should be able to easy position some more light-demanding corals near the t5s.

I think I've settled on the t5 fixture I want (tek from reefgeeks), and hopefully Ive found a good skimmer in the used octopus. Now I think I just need to decide on a powerhead or two and use my current hob filters for physical (filter floss) and chemical (chemipure/purigen, etc) filtering. I also really want a fuge but for now I might load one of the hob's with chaeto and see how that works with a small pc light.

Glad to report the frags you gave me are doing well! The star polyps are extending fully and the mushrooms are huge! Thanks again!

I have 2 sets of brand new 48" T5 tek II lighting I will sell or trade. I'll get the specs for you when I get home if you are interested.
