My black sea urchin has been losing its long spikes over the past 4 weeks. There are only a few left. It looks like a small black ball now. Is it dying?

Check your water quality, I hear that they shed spines when the water quality is poor.

You probably won't be able to save him now. What's your salinity? Your salinity should probably be around 36 ppm for inverts.

i'm sorry to say that there is no hope for your Diadema Urchin... that is too bad as they are good reef tank inhabitants.
There has got to be something out of wack with your water parameters IMO. They also don't handle rapid changes in water parameters either.
