blocking open back hood - to prevent "Carpet Surfers"

Last weekend I found that the 2nd of my original clowns (5 years old) went carpet surfing! (The other carpet surfed 2 years ago)

I have an open top with a full hood - but open back. I don't want to close it up since this open back ventilates the heat from my lights.

Any suggestions on what to use to "block" the opening? I don't want to make it a permanent thing since I regularly remove the hood for cleaning etc. I could rig up some egg crate, but with my luck the fish would jump right through the slot.

Any other ideas/comments?

Thanks!

Eggcrate works great for me. I hung them on small "tea cup" hooks. Basically no airflow blockage, easy to remove/reinstall, and clean.

How much do you think a plastic or fiberglass screen from home depot would block air flow?

Maybe you could use eggcrate or window screen and then cut holes in the top or higher up if you think it restricts flow.

I would think waaaay too much. Before I used eggcrate, I used the plastic webbing from my old wet/dry DLS floss roll. It had a smaller opening but still was very open. Someone is bound to have some of that laying around.

use fiberglass screen door material. its extremely open and nothing will get through. difficult to remove though. so Id personally attach it to egg crate to give it substance. could attach it half way up, figuring the small fish able to fit through egg crate cant jump that high, the bigger fish wont fit through the unscreened egg crate.

instead of trying to block the opening jsut use a 4inch wide strip off eggcrate that rest on the tank trim this will prevent them from jumping out the back but still allow u access to the tank without having to remove it (think eurobrace) they would have to jump up onto the eggcrate first which more than likely they would jsut jump into from underneath
